I pulled the oil pan to swap it out for a center sump version to fit in my car and like an idiot I used a wire wheel on my drill to get the gasket off- I had the hole covered with rags but of course a ton of the little pices and some big chunks an inch or bigger got in the motor - I got as much as I could find out and put the new oil pan on, but before I fire it up I'm thinking i should pull the pan off maybe turn it upside down on the engine stand and fill it with gas and then dump it over to wash out anything left- or maybe just use motor oil dumped in the heads to let it wash down and into the pan then just change the oil? Any help is appreciated thank you (man I learn way too many things the hard way!)

it depends what size the pieces are , , you could pull the drain plug & wash it down out the drain plug , if it sucks up into the pick up screen the scren is very fine & could plug the pick up tube , it is a lot of work to rmove the pan

yea I know - I hate to do it but now is the time as it's on the engine stand - mabe I just prime the motor and make sure I have pressure then pull the oil plug and look for and fish out any debris

If it is on a stand, I would pull the pan now, before priming the engine, flip the engine over and make sure as much junk as possible is out.

I woudl even consider pulling the crank out just to make sure there are no big chunks that could screw up the engine. 

Is this a fresh rebuild, or just a oil pan change.

Better to spend the tiem now, that screw up the engine boyond repair later.

this was only an oil pan change to go from a hotrod truck with 600 miles on it to my cuda to swap the 318- I tried getting every piece of red rtv that fell in before putting the windage tray and new oil pan on but I've been losing sleep thinking I might have missed some chunks- wouldn't be the first time I screwed something up cause I'm an idiot! I just try not to do it as often as I used to when I was younger.

OK oil pan is coming off and I'm going to try filling it up with gas and turning it over while on the stand and let the gas pour out and hopefully wash out all the pieces. I really dont want to start pulling the crank. I'll f... that up for sure

Do you plan to put gas in the pan and then bolt the pan on the motor? Is this while the motor is upside down on the stand?  Do you then intend to flip the engine over to wash everything out?  If so I would not recommend it. You should be able to get everything out of the pan while it is off.  Did you get gasket material in the motor?  If so how?

I'll flip the motor while in the stand (its the rotating type) pull the pan and windage tray and fill it with gas- then while its still open I'll rotate the motor back down and all the gas will run out - I got the gasket material in there while cleaning the rtv off wit ha wire brush. I had rags filling the hole nad covering hte crank, but of course the wire brush on the drill grabbed the rag and everything went flying - rtv pieces in every nook and cranny of the motor. I think I got most out but I have a sick feeling there is more in there just waiting to get caught in the oil journals

I would pull the pan before you flip the engine.  This way you do not dump more gasket material in the motor.  You should be able to clean out the gasket material that is on the motor with compressed air.  Is the gasket in pieces or it it more of a powder?
