« on: June 10, 2011 - 12:50:40 PM »
Going to change the oil in my 71 Cuda 340 and wonder what is the best engine oil supplement to add in with my new oil?? I have used the GM EOS in the past but not sure if they still make it or not??

Thanks

It is still available, but, why not just buy a good oil with plenty of the desired additives?

I have never tried this, but I see it advertised a lot.

Steve:
As per your reply can you recommend a good oil that already had the additives in it??

for normal street engines that don't have very high spring pressures, Valvoline VR Racing, or Brad Penn are very popular.  Then there are more expensive oils such as Joe Gibbs, etc.

Mobil1 15-50 has a reasonable amount.  Amsoil has a new zddp enhanced oil.

There are a lot of lists on the net showing oils with a decent amount.

First rule is to stay away from oils that are rated SM as they are guaranteed to be too low for most people's comfort.

Secondly, be aware that most cam failures occur on break in so be sure you use a good oil and/or good additive.  Some like Joe Gibbs have a special break in oil that needs no supplement.

Finally, Summit, Comp, Edelbrock are all advertising high zddp specialty oils.  The market alway responds to a need, whether real, or imagined.

Chryco was pushing some oil that he was a dealer for.  I thought they were a sponsor here, but, I don't find them right off hand.

Problem with all the speciality oils is the price and add in shipping and wow!

The Mobile-1 15-50W looked really good until I saw is was+$9/qt!  Maybe I'm living in the past but I don't want to pay >$70 for changing my own oil.   :dunno:

Anyone find a good additive we can pick-up locally to add to the "normal" $4/qt oil?

I use Brad Penn
I pay less than $ 60 a case and pick it up down the street from where I work. Go to the web site and find a dist  near you.

Best I could find for the Brad Penn is $80/case on top of a 1hr drive to get it.  So that's not happening.

I guess I'll try the additive at Advanced Auto.

The thing you have to remember is, yes they are expensive oil changes(I use Amsoil), but I only do one change a year. So unless you are putting decent miles on the car, this is a small price to pay.   :2cents:

I use Valvoline Racing in a couple of my cars...usually pay a bit over $5.00/qt

Brad Penn comes out a bit under $6 delivered to my door.   http://theoilwarehouse.com/?mainURL=/store/item/2a2ke/Racing_Oil/Brad_Penn_Penn_Grade_1_20w-50_Racing_Oil.html

Thx for the link, it comes out to just under $6/qt, painful, but I can live with that.

Anyone use Mystik or Royal Purple? The guy who had my car before me swore by Mystik.   Matt

After cam break in a good everyday oil to use is any name brand that is recommended for diesel trucks.  I use Valvoline Blue that is recommended by Cummins.  I buy it at the Cummins service center located near me. It has the additives necessary for cam and lifter protection.  PK
