Intake Question

I am dropping a 360 into my 87 dodge Ram.  this is an 86 Block.

I will be using a four barrel on this engine.  I ran across two stock intakes.
One is a 70 Model the other I am unsure of.

What can you guys tell me about these?

This is a 70's model, no studs inside the intake, and has extra bolting holes on the flange

This is the other.  There is a stud inside the inlet and the choke brackets are different.

If they are both big port 340/360 intakes and you're not concerned with emissions I'd say go with the older one.  The newer one has the EGR setup and that nipple in the plenum.  The older unit lacks those therefore less to go wrong.  If one or both are the smaller port 318 setup they are still useable, but will be leaving power on the table.  The choke setups are different for each but should still be readily available.  you didn't say what carb you are using.  The intake is designed for a spread bore carb (Thermoquad or Rochester Quadrajet).  If you are putting an Eddy or Holley on it you can get their electric choke setup and just block off the choke plate.  You'd need an adapter for the square bore carbs though.

I would rather use a Thermoquad or Rochester Quadrajet, however I am going to be using a Holley 8050B ( I think) other numbers on the carb are.... 80457-7 1077 & 11761

How would I know if this a 318 or 340/360 intake? Emmissions I could care less about .... Nipples I have, and I believe they both have them.

I just learned a bit about the square bore thing, so I guess I will be looking for an adapter...  just another thing to track down and pay for ...lol

I'm not overly familiar with Holley carbs but that is a square bore design.  You'll need an adapter plate or it will never seal.  The good news is the Oreo cookie looking thing on the passenger side is your electric choke so you won't need the factory one.  The bad news is if you use the older intake you need to make a block off plate to stop an exhaust leak.  The newer intake won't have that problem but you'll have the EGR to worry about instead.

The difference between 318 and 340/360 intakes is the size of the ports where they meet the head.  If you have a set of gaskets handy match them up.  Nearly all gasket sets are made for the larger port sizes out of convenience.  If the ports are a lot smaller, you may have a 318 intake.  318 4bbl engines were pretty common later on so the EGR intake could be either or.  I'm willing to bet the older one would be the larger port design.

The adapter is not as expensive as I thought it would be.

I will look at the port size tomorrow.  Are the 4bbl, and 2bbl ports the same size for a 318?

At this point; it's looking like I will use the newer style intake,  unless there is a port sizing issue, then I will have to make a plate to cover up that choke port.

all 318 intake ports are the same size , there was nevera 318 4 bbl until the late 80s on police diplomats etc
the early intake must be 73 or newer but the choke opening will need to be sealed witha plate , the later one you may as well remove the EGR valve & seal that port off as well . Both intakes require the adapter plate to use the Holley carb , no big deal except it will raise the carb 1/2 "

The ports are all comparable, the early model is a 1970 version, the late model, I guess at an 80 model.

I just talked with the guy I got the 70 model from, he has the chunk that drops in the hole, so I am hoping to get it in a week or so.
