1973 Challenger - 383 ,4 Speed, Triple Black
« on: June 11, 2011 - 06:30:03 PM »
My dad is selling his 1973 Dodge Challenger. Full frame off restoration completed 2 years ago. Car is an original triple black car with flawless paint (there were some handprints on the car when the pictures were taken). Originally a 340 Rallye car, motor is long gone so it now has a 383 and a 4 speed. Car also has A/C (factory) and power front disc brakes. Rear end is a 8 3/4 with 3.23 gears. Any questions please call or pm. Additional pictures are available on request. Car is currently located in Billings, MT. My dad's name is Darrell and he can be reached at (406)348-3023.  Asking $42,500.

Hate to break it to you, but high NADA value around here is only $35k. I do believe he is asking a bit much.

You may be right but I don't think he was asking you how much he should sell it for.
And you can't put a value on a car with a book and a couple of pics. Just keep your pricing opinions to yourself.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

aris_unlimited:  I appreciate your opinion, but I'm sure you know how much it costs to restore these cars.  It's hard to put 40K+ into these cars and then only ask 35K for it. And that's not figuring the man hours into it.  The body and paint alone was 10 grand (and that was with trading out labor to build our painter a shop), black is a bugger to get right.  He's not asking the money to make anything out of it, but to get back what he has into it.  It's a fun hobby (well sometimes anyway  :grinno:) for him and he just wants to fund another project.

This car is in great/perfect shape and I wouldn't hesitate to drive it anywhere.  Nothing needs to be done to it.  It amazes me how quickly the costs add up when you restore a car as I'm sure a lot of other people on here can attest to.

Take a note from yourself. Keep your opinions about what I say to yourself.

I was simply informing him as to the value of the car, so that he could have an idea of what a buyer may be expecting to pay for it. So he can expect people to try and haggle him down on price. I know that whenever I buy any kind of car, I expect to pay less than NADA value for it, I don't like paying NADA value, and I would never pay more than NADA value.

I totally understand all about the hobby lol. I know that I will have around $30k into my cuda by the time it is done. And I would not want to lose money on it. Just a friendly reminder of NADA value, so you can expect people to try and low ball.

What is the other project?

:iagree:  I think what he is trying to say is it's pretty easy to get upside down with these cars. I did with my BB Buick project. I'll never get out of it what I have into it.

I had a nicer 73 original 340 rallye and only got 16000 out of it and that was when the price was on the way down. Way too much for the car. They did not put 383's in them in 73? Clone car?   :stirpot:

It was originally a 340 Rallye car, but the motor was long gone when he bought it. I wouldn't call it a "clone", just adding a big block where none preexisted.  I'm sure for an increase in price, he could be persuaded to put the 440+6 and 5 speed in it that he has laying in the garage.

I think NADA has it's place with cars that have not been restored, but I don't think that the people at Kelly's BB take into account just how expensive Mopars are to restore to "like new" condition.  Heck, I'm scared to think what I have into mine...but I never plan to sell it.  I don't take NADA as the gospel when I look at restored cars, too many variables when it comes to the quality of the resto.  Sure I could find a car, cut a bunch of corners and slap a coat of Maco paint on it with some "good enough" body work and get a decent price out of it.  But to me quality is where it is at.  My dad and me have too much perfectionist in us.  Honestly...it's a really nice car.  I think you'd still be way ahead of the resto price game with that car as it sits.
What is the other project?

He has another pair of Challengers that he wants to finish up.  1970 340/4speed and a 1971 440/auto R/T.   Too many cars...not enough storage space.  :) Good thing all the neighbors are "car poor" and have room in their garages for everything.  People just keep finding 'em and telling him about 'em.

Very nice looking car.  I have a 70 and have over 35 in it and still not finished.  It would be hard to get that price for a 73, but it is a gorgeous car.
