I could tell by the pics that your car was originally an automatic car.  The 383 L code 2 bbl. was available with the 727 automatic only.  This pic is from the original dealer order book.

There was an article or post about a guy who got his stolen Challenger back after it had "legally" changed hands many times.  Before you put a ton of money in the car, be sure to get documentation that the car can not be return to the original owner or insurance company.

Looks like a really cool project!
I already went through all that before I bought it but thanks

:iagree: check real good before sinking a ton of money into it,there has been several people lose the car because the theft report got it back to the orignal owner or owners family, and as far as a 4 spd does it have the 4 spd hump,,looked like an auto hump in your car,but was hard to tell in pictures

I don't have the title so I had a police officer run the vin number and he said that it's benstole 30 years and it's legit and next day I went to the DMV and gave them the paper the officer signed and now it's on my name

I couldn't find the original article, but here's the thread...

http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=63428.msg651349#msg651349

I remember the Challenger had a CLEAN title (restored) and licensed many times as a clean car.  The car was removed from the person with it and given to the GRANDSON of the owner in which it was stolen.  The title and registration didn't matter.  Just to be safe before you spend a bunch of money restoring it, I would double check with an attorney in your state.  Might not be anything to worry about, but better safe than sorry.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Welcome to the site :)

I'm glad that you covered your Challenger purchase by obtaining physical documentation which evidently satisfies your local PD as well as your local DMV.

Your fender tag will resolve whether the Challenger was built as an auto or manual. Reading from left to right, the bottom line will have two three-character codes. The first three-character code indicates which engine, the second three-character code will indicate which transmission.

Although most on-line decoders are not 100% accurate, I like to use the reference area on MyMopar. Take it with a grain of salt as you would MapQuest (  ;) ) for instance and you'll come pretty close to knowing how the car was originally spec'd out.

http://www.mymopar.com/6971opcodes.htm

Do a search here using keywords for threads relating to what is involved in an auto-to manual conversion or start your own thread. There is an awful lot of first-hand experience here and we're all willing to share. Best of luck x_cell.

Russ,
In this instance the VIN is all that is needed to tell what transmission came in the car.  L engine code is automatic only.  The fender tag will read the same.  Also someone else mentioned the V-8 emblems on the fenders.  The V-8 emblem was used on the G-318 and the L-383 2bbl.

Take a photo of you firewall.  There are some big differences between a manual and auto firewall.  There are other ways, but the firewall is probably the easiest.

One way would be to look at the pics I posted of the dealer order guidelines.   They came from

http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/

Look the site over.  Once again.  A 'L' code car came ONLY with an automatic.
