Changing Set-up .... thoughts? 440 Challanger
« on: June 13, 2011 - 10:47:24 AM »
Guys:

First off I want to say that I feel this website is the best information database on the internet in regards to Mopars.  Very knowledgeable people.

I have on order a Performer RPM intake, and Mopar 114 LSA 509 cam to install in my 440 Challenger.

I believe the rest I my drivetrain is all configured to the new parts, but are their any other free mods/ tricks I can to during the install of the new cam ?

Also, I am running a 440 source billet dizzy with mech advance.  I currently have 38 degrees at idle.  Does anyone have a idea as to how much advance the dizzy should add at WOT?
Should I back the starting timing down ??

Thanks.... John

that cam would not be my first pick if you can cancel the order
are you changing the valve springs with the cam ?
not much performance you can add while changing the cam , you can degree the cam in , I would use a 1215 intake pan to block the hea cross over .
I tend to set idle timing at 16-18* & use mechanical advance to get to 36-38* total & ignore the vacuum advance altogether

I already have the 509 springs in the heads.

Before the six-pack cam, we had a 108 LSA 509 installed.
The cam was strong, but didn't have enough vac for the power brakes.  The 114 LSA version will.

Can my stock 906 heads support 450 hp ????

Does anyone know if the 2nd batch of 440 source Stealth heads have the gasket problem fixed ?

Your 906's would handle 450 hp. As far as the Stealths mine were from 09 and the Felpro 8519 gasket fit fine.

Do I still need to use a drop base air filter with my Performer Carb ?

Big time difference once I got the tuning down.  Bigger valves, closed chamber, and lightweight all in one.

Guys:

I bought 2 bottles of Comp Cams Engine break-in oil additive that I plan to use when I install the new cam.

Is that all I will need or should I still also get some of that cam paste that used to come with the cams ?

I really don't want to wipe the cam..... ?

You need the cam paste more than the break in additive.
Do you know how to break in a new cam?Run it at abt 2500-3000 rpm for the first 20-30 minutes.

Here's a vid of my challenger's first fire up

And yes, you'll need a drop base air filter with a performer rpm.
Burnouts are cool but Traction is the Action

most cam companies suggest you run the cam at 1800-2000 for the first 20 minutes or so, which is enough to get adequate oil off the con rods onto the cam as well as flow off the heads to keep the cam oiled

I called 440 Source and the tech told me that their heads would be worth 40Hp on my engine.
So... is it worth the $1200 to upgrade for 40 hp on a street engine ???  I dunno.

Does anyone think I would even notice it on a street 440 that only gets revved to 5000 ?

Thanks...

BTW ----

A 440 Source Billet distributer with advance the base timing + 18 at 2700 rpm at the factory setting.

So at 20 degrees idle, you will have a total timing of 38 @ 2700 rpm.

You will definitely feel a 40 hp increase. Whether it's worth $1,200 to you is another question. It would be to me. :-)

 :iagree:

If you did even more mods, like pistons, cam and new intake, they may be worth the money.

I did add Edelbrock Performer heads on my 440, but I did a total rebuild, the numbers were 493.8 hp at 5300 rpm and 513 ft lbs of torque at 4200 rpm.  and to get those numbers with iron heads would have cost almost as much with the aluminum heads.
