67vertman:

What kind of set-up are you running besides the performer heads?  Intake, carb, ...?

I am getting ready to bolt on a Performer RPM intake, 509 114 LSA cam and maybe OOTB 440 Source Heads.

440 Source told me I would be around 500hp with that set-up.  460hp with the 906 heads.

I called 440 Source and the tech told me that their heads would be worth 40Hp on my engine.
So... is it worth the $1200 to upgrade for 40 hp on a street engine ???  I dunno.

Does anyone think I would even notice it on a street 440 that only gets revved to 5000 ?

Thanks...

Well now, that would depend on how well the bottom end was set up...Static Compression ratios, how far "In the hole" the pistons are...Things like that....You got some .080 in the hole 1978 440 bottom end, you will not see as great an increase as you would with say a Zero deck 1972 440....

I started with a 1974 block, bored 30 over, new steel crank, new rods and pistons, zero deck height with 10-1 compression. Edelbrock heads mild ported, just to clean up casting marks and port match.  I then went with 1:6 roller rockers and a three angle valve job....yes all this on brand new heads.  Crane cam wit 529 lift, M-1 manifold and a holley 950 double pumper.

I wanted a motor that would run all day, and still have good power and torque numbers.  I think my engine builder did a good job meeting these requirements.  I haven't put it in my car yet, so real world drivability is yet to be seen.

Does anyone have a good estimate of how much the 440 Source Heads flow at .500 lift I/E.

Is around 260 cfm a good estimate ?

Well I did it .......................

I ordered a set of 440 source heads today to go along with the Performer RPM intake.
Got a pretty good deal.... set of heads with better Comp Cam 7 degree locks and free shipping  $995.

I also got head gaskets, spark plugs, and head bolts.

I plan on takings the valves out and oiling the guides prior to start-up, and double checking those locks.....

Thoughts ... please

Thanks Straw..... thats exactly what I was looking for.

Chry:

Supposely they no longer use the junk locks.  They now only use Comp Cams 7-deg locks now..... So I was told.

If the locks look like junk, I will go to 10 deg locks/retainers.

Thanks

RECEIVED the heads today.

Very impressed with them.

The intake ports are super smooth. Looks like someone, either the factor or 440 Source already grinded/smoothed the ports by the guides, and the locks were upgraded to Comp Cam locks.

The exhaust ports are smooth also.  Overall the castings appear really good.

For a total of $998, they look like a great deal.  $1100 for heads,head bolts,spark plugs,head gaskets.

I will try to get pics.

Well the heads I bought do have Comp 7 degree locks installed, but should I be concerned about the 440 Source retainers?

Any thoughts ??

Question about the 7 deg locks/ret...Why are they junk?  Is it the manufacturer, quality, or jsut that it is a 7 deg lock?  Why is this so bad?  Doesn't spring pressure come into play here?  Can the 10 deg locks be overkill?

10 * locks are never overkill , I have no clue on the quality of the locks & retainers used by 440 Source , but for around $100 you could switch everything out for 10* , seems cheap to me when you are going that far anyway
