well my take is the longer rod keeps the piston @ tdc longer for more complete burn & more effective power + better use of the fuel / better milage so I prefer to stay away from the short rod combos & get the best rod ratio possible which may be why I often get unreal MPG for the builds ?

Chryco, so it's really a fuel economy issue rather than more power between the 500 and 512? Also how much machine work do you typically have to do to the block for the 512? 440 Source says it can be done in your garage with a dremel is that true? Thank for all the info this thread is giving me a lot of ideas for my build.

So far, I plan on going with stock non-adjustable steel rockers with hydraulic flat tappet lifters.  I bought the original style Rhoads lifters p/n 2018 with that in mind.

I think that I have changed my mind and decided to go with the 512 stroker kit.  This is how I figure things but tell me if I am wacked:

The rod ratio issue:  The 440 is a big motor and has plenty of torque already, so what Chryco Psycho said makes sense.  Get a longer rod ratio=more top end power and if I score a little more fuel economy along the way, then bonus!  Also, I may just be splitting hairs a bit with this rod ratio thing.  Heck a stock 440 has a rod ratio of 1.802  (500 RR = 1.628 and 512 RR = 1.670)

But here is the main reason that I changed my mind...

This is a quote form Muscle Motors web site:

440/500: 4.15 stroke x 6.76 rod
This kit will require minor bore notching so that the rod bolts do not interfere with the block. You will also need to clearance the boss that the oil pick up tube screws into.

440/512: 4.25 stroke x 7.100 rod
This smaller journal does not need bore notching and only minimal work to the oil pick up boss.

Sounds like less work to me to go with the 512 kit.

no it is not a fuel economy issue so much ,
what is about is more effecient use of the fuel which sounds like Fuel economy at a glance but it also has to do with getting the most BTU from the fuel which also increases power & gives more dwell time to use the power as the piston moves away more slowly .
Mopar always used longer rod ratios than Ford or GM & the efficency of the Mopars have always been better , , I remember Gm trucks with 350s barely getting 9 MPG while 440s were getting 16 or better . it si the same today , the Cummins can get 35+ MPG while the short rod Duramax or the Powerjokes get 9-11 MPG , My old Cummins was getting 24 MPG & dynoed at 930 Ft lbs tq , , I was getting 19 MPG towing 6500 lbs in my 03 Cummins so it was making lots of power for the fuel used

Any concerns that I should know about with using these valve springs with that Voodoo cam and stock steel non-adjustable rocker arms/ Rhoads lifters p/n 2018 and my stock 906 iron head?

Valve Spring Type: Single with Damper. Recommended for maximum .600" lift. 
Valve Spring Closed (seat) Pressure: Approx. 130 pounds @ 1.875" installed height
Valve Spring Open Pressure Approx. 330 pounds @ 1.275" (.600" lift.) 
Valve Spring Inner Diameter: 1.050"
Valve Spring Maximum Lift:  .600"
Valve Spring Coil Bind Height:  1.130" 
Valve Spring Outer Diameter: 1.550"
Valve Spring Free Height 2.400"
Valve Spring Installed Height: 1.875"
Valve Spring Wire Diameter: .202"
Valve Spring Number of Coils: 5.5

the springs should be fine , you can always call Lunati teck to see what spring pressures they recommend with the cam to be sure

Tough to descibe exactly what I am talking about with rod ratios & power
what is wierd is that a highway tractor with a massive 14 lt engine can get 6-7 MPG pulling 80,000 lbs or more but they use a long rod in line 6 engine usually , then you gat a 6 lt Powerjoke Ford making approx 1/3 of the power & not pulling any weight  but using 2/3 of the fuel ... WHY ????
 I have tuned 440s to get better than 20 MPG & 512 ci to get 17 ish MPG with long con rods but stock 302 or 350 engines will not get close to the power or milage
My Current 06 5.9 Cummins is getting an unbelievable 35 MPG unloaded on the highway with a programmer it can be boosted near 1000 ft lbs of torque with minimal parts changed , I have seen them dyno at over 1600 RW measured  ft lbs with twin turbos , bigger injectors better air intake & exhaust .

I may have to move to a new thread.  This started as a "get my motor running" project but has move into a restoration project.  I guess I just re-caught that old bug.  lol

I think I pretty much have the engine lined out, I just have to get my block back from the machine shop, order a few more parts, then start the build.  In the mean time I decided to go ahead and get her painted.  I am going to go back to her original color.  FC7 fender code, in-violet/plum crazy.

The block checked out ok and I ordered my 512 stroker kit.   I also got some POR-15 Hemi orange engine enamel.   I should have all the parts by Tuesday next week.

I ordered the kit from 440 Source.   440>>512 with -27cc dished pistons.   I am using my cast iron 906 heads.  That should put me right at 9 to 9.5 to 1 compression.   I also got a stroker windage tray and a new half inch oil pick-up tube.   
I am going with 9.5:1 compression so I can run pump gas.
