I am hoping it is something simple like that.   I figure at the very least,  I have been wanting to pull the motor so so I can clean up and paint the engine well,  re-run some of the wires,  and clean and coat the exhaust manifolds.   This is just forcing an opportunity.

I am betting the starter is locked up,,I have seen them lock in and not disengage and appear that the motor was locked up

OK, guys, motor is out.  Looks like I might have a spun bearing.  The starter is fine.  The valve train and pistons should be fine.  Hopefuly, all I will have to do is turn the crank and new bearings. I won't be able to get the motor apart til next weekend due to the fourth of july weekend obligations.  Because the motor is out anyway, I am going to replace my old black rusty headers with TTI polished ceramic coated headers 1 7/8" pipe and 3" collector.  I am going to repaint the engine orange and install a mopar electronic ignition.  I am also going to clean up the wiring and repaint the engine well.

Here is my question.  Any good or bad comments about the TTI headers.  They are fairly expensive and I kind of would like to get a warm fuzzy that I am getting a good set of headers. (I have not ordered them yet)

Any suggestions anyone might have while the motor is apart or anything I might want to do to the engine well?  Anything you guys would have done during your restorations?

This will not be a fast process for me as I will need to do this a bit at a time as I have the money for it, so please be patient with me and my updates...

be sure the rod is resized, or you will probably spin another bearing shortly.

Most seem to feel the TTI are the best with Doug's a close second

I would recommend a newer cam profile , not sure what is in there now , new chain of course & valve springs
Heck you could do a stroker kit as well & take it up to 512 ci , I think this a 440 right ?

I am looking ahead a bit while I am working on the engine,  I have the headers ordered,  I was planning on going with 3 inch pipes the rest of the way back.   I was thinking maybe that might be too big.   Maybe 2 1/2 pipes would be better.   I am building the engine to 450ish hp.   I want a deep exhaust tone.   What do you guys think?   2 1/2 or 3 inch system?   Also,  any advantage to buying TTI or having a mandrel bent set made at a muffler shop?

2 and a 1/2   3 inch sounds like a truck and looses the old school wrapping sound when you get on it.

450 hp is about the top end for 2-1/2.  I think you would be okay performance wise with either, but you do get a different sound with the 3".  My friend has a 13.5:1 440 that sounds awesome with 3" pipes.  As far as the pipes, I would just get them done at a local shop.  You will pay twice as much or more if you gett TTIs.

I was thinking about going with the 3 inch because I am more interested in the sound than racing.  You will never catch me street racing and I have no plans to take my car to a race or dragstrip.  I just want to have it sound good driving into local car shows and cruise nights.  I guess I don't want a gutless car and I understand there needs to be a bit of back-pressure for low end torque.  I don't want to do something that I wll regret later either as I only want to do this once.

Any thoughts?

well everybody has there own preference, me I love the sound of the  3" exhaust behind my TTI, but there are some on here that dont like it when driving as there is some deep sound,,so unless you can compare it to a car with that setup you can only guess,,me I  love it,,but thats just me  :2cents:

The original focus of this build was originally to just get my 'Cuda running. It has grown a bit...

My 1970 440 short block is currently at the machine shop and I hope that the cylinders will clean up at .040 over. It was .030 over already from a previous overhaul. I have pretty much decided to go with a 500 stroker kit from 440Source.com (I will order it once the block is back from the machine shop) with 9.33 compression ratio and dished pistons. I am also going back with my stock 906 iron heads. The quick math numbers should get me around 500 horse power with 91/93 pump gas.

I am still researching the cam and any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I ordered a set of TTI headers with 1 7/8 primaries and 3 inch collectors. I am going with 3 inch pipes (with 2.5" H-pipe crossover) all the way back and Dynomax super turbo mufflers.

Are you going to have the heads ported?

The Lunati cams are good, but I'll let someone more wiser advise you in this area.
