rear axle end play
« on: December 25, 2004 - 06:53:26 PM »
Ok, the rear end is rebuilt and the axles are back in.
All new seals, new wheel bearings, 3:91 suregrip in a 741 case.
The drivers side axle has about .060-.080 end play.
The pass side axle can be adjusted with the adjuster collar to anything. Currently I have it at .030 endplay.
Adjusting the pass side axle endplay does not change the drivers side endplay as I expected. I thought it somehow set both the same?

What is the correct endplay? And should the adjuster collar adjust both?
How do you get them the same?

thanks

WHich type of sure grip do you have ??
The 4 pinion [spider gear] clutch type has 2 small buttons that fit into the center cross pin , the axles butt up against these buttons & the button float so the end play is removed from both wheel brgs .
if you have the 2 pinion [spider gear] cone type sure grip type the floater pin should be in the sure grip & cannot fall out , this does the same thing & both axles butt against it & adjusting the threaded collar will remove the end play from both wheel brgs
The end play should be set at .008 -.018 ,
Without the center floater pin or buttins the wheel brgs will fail very quickly & generally you will have a bad oil leak into the brakes as well as the seals will not seal the axle when it is not held on center

thanks chryco,
from the description, I must have the type with the two buttons, since in the other type it cant fall out.
I will have to pull it to put the buttons in as they must be missing.
Is the center pin hollow all the way thru so these buttons just but up against each other? If so, why two?
do they pilot on the axle ends somehow? Maybe I could put them on the axle end and then slide it in without pulling the diff again?
any idea where to purchase these buttons?

thanks again.

The buttons are sstill available from Mopar too Part #2881313
which gaskets are you confused about ??
there is a steel shim that goes between the brake backing plate & axle housing , there is a foam gasket that goes between the brake backing plate & axle flange

Hold on now :grinno:  what did you set the end play at?  did you grease the axle bearings?  Inquiring minds need to know ;D

You need to turn the adj in till you find zero end play.  Do not over tighten past zero.  Then you should put the wheels back on and go for a short easy drive.  Then come back and set it at 0.005-0.008 but no more.

tquad,
yes, I packed the axle bearings well.
I set the end play at 010-.015
seems very tight. all my cudas (70, 74, 71)  had way more than this when I check them. Like .040-.060
good advice to take a test drive and recheck. I will do this.
thanks

factory spec is .008-.018 according to the service manual, does hurt to recheck after a test drive though

Hello hello hello :grinno: this is the year 2005 not 1970. Thirty five years &  Hundreds of thousands of miles of real world testing have proven the factory spec to be too loose.  0.005-0.008 is plenty

Is this saying that no end play exists?... I want to be very sure because I just installed the clutch style sure grip & can get no end play.

The only way you will get no end play is if you have green bearings installed.
Do you have an adjuster on the pass side axle?

Original cone bearings. The adjuster is on the RR.  I followed the Service Manual directions & ran the adjuster in till the threads were flush, while installing the RR axle it started getting too tight so I backed the adjuster off so the flange nuts could be tightened, now have no play in either axle even with the adjuster backed way out.
