Another site that shows a retrofit in a Mustang.  This one has the retractor anchored to the wheel well and goes through the package tray.

Looks doable in a E-body but I'd probably want a beefier belt guide on the package tray.

Looks nice, I wish these guys would have better details on the donor parts used.

The Mustang used belts and retractors from a 89/90 Hyundai Excel.

I just bought a pair of above mount ones http://www.hemiperformance.com.au/store2/p_612_Rear-Retractable-Seat-Belt-top-of-parcel-shelf with a cover to sit on top of the parcel shelf. These will sit on the far left and right sides, not the center as I have seen some do.

I bought 2 1970 lap belts from year one which i am using as donors for the tongue and buckle on the new retractables, so they looks as original as possible. It should be a pretty easy install.

I would post some pics but I just boxed them all to go to a seat belt vendor to cut an resow the belts and buckles. I will post pics when they come back.

The under shelf ones look great but its a much bigger project than I want and I think these will look fine, and still be on the far left and right of the seats which is what I'm after.

so, how do you reinforce underneath.  Just a bolt through the sheetmetal won`t do  :grinno:

I'm going to put a 3" x 3" plate on the top and bottom of the sill, as the retractor will sit right near where the sheet metal has some holes punched for what i guess is convertible top brackets.

Hi Jerry,

what do you mean exactly? Sorry, i can't follow, where the kit ^^ belongs to. I also need the reinforcement plates and appreciate any input how to build them (let them build).

This is the kit AU6pack bought, I've circled the reinforcement plate.  I've seen examples of plates where the nut is welded to the plate and, in this case, where the nut is not welded.

The rear retractor install on the mustang is very clean, you would hardly know they are there when looking into the boot. I'll be interested to see where this ends up, as I would like to do something similar in the next few months.

Yes, saw this, but the Challenger has a square hole and I think there is not much to reinforce, more to close the hole (didn't measure it till now). I will let somebody make the original reinforcement plate like in the engineering illustration if it is payable. Don't play with safety. I think the engineers back in the 70s made it right already.

Edited a typo ^^

Keep it simple.... One strong plate of metal and the square raising one top. The raising bit higher on the outside and lower on the inside and to fit to the square whole, that is already in place. Will try it in the car the next days and have to drill the holes and thread to mount it from the top through the holes next to the square hole.
