BF Goodrich tire failure.
« on: June 19, 2011 - 09:31:18 PM »
Almost lost it on way home from Father's Day Car Show.
Just crossed over Chesapeake Bay Bridge, rear started to vibrate and then fishtailing.
Pulled onto shoulder of road. Opened door and looked down at tire,
Tire split wide open.
There was a threat last month about tires and I mentioned the BF Goodrich are known for this
ply seperation.  Our local club members have had issues as I with these tires.
Not even 2ooo miles on tires.
Check picture.
There is no cord over the mesh of wiring in the tires. The wiring is eating at the inside of the
rubber causing ply separation.  Calling Goodrich, BBB, Insurance company, DOT Monday.

Bad luck on the tire, but good luck you came out unscathed. I'll be interested in finding out what BFG does for you. I've never seen a tire that new, fail that badly.

Wow, that could have been real bad.  Glad there were no injuries.

Couple years ago friend with a RR had the right rear blow doing 60 mph, tread ripped apart,
crushed the lower rear quarter panelin.
Thank the Lord it didn't happen on the Bridge.
Another club member with a Challenger RT mentioned his car was wondering all over the road.
Both front tires has bulges in the tread area.  Ply separation.

Firestone had similar issues with their 721 radials back in the 70's.  There were a lot of bad accidents and some deaths I believe.  It almost put them out of business.  I have a set of BFGs on the Barracuda, please let us know what you find out!

What was the manufacture date on them?   It's on the tire,   Last two numbers after the dot stamp is the year made.

Example.

I bought these new tires two years ago for my truck so it was 2009 the stamp is 09 so these were indeed new.   Whenever you buy "new tires" always check these numbers.   You maybe buying 4 or 5 year old tires they the tire shop wants rotated out of their shop.

WOW,
Glad you (and the car) we not hurt. I also have BFG's front and back. I often turn the back's over a bit         (295-50-15's) and they have held up well. I hope there isn't any problems with them, but keep us posted on what you find out. I live near the bridge tunnel (Portsmouth VA) and know a blow-out there could have been ugly!  :22yikes:

This happened to me at 75MPH last Sept. Felt the back end starting to get a little loose--thought I had a rear wheel bearing problem since I just had the rear end done...then BOOM......folded the R/R 1/4 up into the trunk pan. Lucky for me I was able to get to the side of the road and the tire still held air!!  No recourse with BFG since the tires were on the car when I bought it. Date coded approx 5 years ago, looked fine and none of them had any dry rot.

Sheesh? this is looking like a "common" issue, not just an isolated case? I have never liked BFG T/A performance wise but first I've heard for issues like this!  :scared:

Everyone in our local Maryland mopar club runs on the BFG.
Most of them had minor ply separation, tire thumping and  plus my three sets of tires in the past.
My friend with a 71 RR and I are the only ones that had the tire split open so far..........
very informative info on this web

I'm glad your ok, not a pretty picture for sure.

I had BFG tires on my 340 Duster in the late 70's, no problems over years of use.   BUT...maybe it's good I could not locate BFG's when I needed tires a few months ago.   Went with Micky Thompson, we will see how they hold up.  Boy I hate crossing fingers.

Had exact samething happen the 15th of June. With same BF Goodrich tires. Traveling south on I95 near I40 turn off to Raliegh NC. Got a slight buzzing then tiny vibration, then whamp and bang peeled third of tread diameter off new (2 year old tire 85-90% tread) left front tire. Which is always exciting at 75mph. Had bout 8inches of steel bands exposed and rest of tire looked brand new.
