While the classic BFG TA is a good looking tire, the fact of the matter is that they have not had any technological improvements made to them since the late 80s, early 90s. Combine that with BFGs pointed interest in producing 17"+ sizes over 15" and it is easy to see that their 15" tire line is a candidate for cost cutting material purchases and low cost manufacturing techniques. Is that the direct cause, probably not, but you add up enough factors and you have greater opportunities for defects. There are been much better 15" tires available from other manufacturers than BFG now days.

Personally, with what I've seen, Mickey Thomspon, Hoosier, and Goodyear are the only ones putting any development and tech in to 15" tires, and most of that effort is in the race tires, but it will have some trickle down impact on street tires.

Had exact samething happen the 15th of June. With same BF Goodrich tires. Traveling south on I95 near I40 turn off to Raliegh NC. Got a slight buzzing then tiny vibration, then whamp and bang peeled third of tread diameter off new (2 year old tire 85-90% tread) left front tire. Which is always exciting at 75mph. Had bout 8inches of steel bands exposed and rest of tire looked brand new.
Thank you and the other responses.  I won't buy them ever, period.

Any word yet from BFG? Seems this is very common. Glad you and the car are ok.  Matt

Glad I came across this post, I was looking to buy a set of BFG's and heard a few folks say there were some failures on them in the last few years. Now I gotta find someone who makes 305/50R15 and 235/60R15 for my car.

I can't recommend Goodyears either. I've had belts shift or bulge on several on my daily drivers.

Anybody have any experience with Firestone Indy 500's? They seem to be in the same or cheaper price range as BFG's.

I can't either, Goodyear more hype than substance IMO. I've had goodyear on several trucks over the years...  :grinno:

:22yikes:  Wow, glad you're ok!  Good thing it wasn't on the front tires!

I'm really shocked how many people had tire issues with BFG.

Sort of scary when you think about all the muscle cars with BFG tires on them.

the people that I know running the Firestones like them far better than the BFGs.  Seem to handle better.

Sounds like there should be some sort of recall. You never hear of problems that severe and common that don't eventually end up in a recall...

On the safety site it looks just about EVERY tire has some complaint about it. With the bazillion tires manufactured and sold every year I dont find it surpriseing actually. I would think BFG from a tech standpoint would be of good design overall. Not saying this because I currently run them either. I know lots like Goodyear I think patially bcause of their racing status ( NASCAR & short track).  BFG is big into the off road & drifing thing so tit for tat.  Or Firestone / Bridgestone in Indy cars. Hell I had a blowout on my rollback coming back from detroit one summer. None of the afore mentioned brands. Didnt run over anything/propwer inflation. When the guy got there with a replacement (this is on the interstate ) I inquired about the tire. He just shrugged and basically said $hit happens, I've seen them all go.  :dunno: Not defending BFG here but more or less saying it happens to all of them at times.

Now ever have a truck w a blowout on the interstate? You better have CASH is all I can say....

Your websites say it all.

Inferior Manufacturing,
WHY?
BFG RADIAL TA's are made in MEXICO.

The steel belting looked like it ate, rubbed thru the 2 ply cord.
Date DOT 2007
less than 3ooo mile on tires, can't find receipt.
Look at the picture of the tread on tire. Tire was still soft rubber not dried out.
