I've got this nagging sound coming from the engine. Sounds like a gear drive noise but I don't have a gear drive. It only does it hot and when you let off the throttle? I bought both the 440 source water pump and housing last year as well as a new chrome alternator. I'm suspecting the water pump as it has play fore and aft, very little but it's there. I'm driving the car to Carlisle and I don't want any headaches getting there! So I'm wanting to replace the 440 source pump with a Mopar performance pump. Anyone done this? Do they fit together? I wasen't exactly happy with the quality of the 440 source housing as I had to machine  3 different area's so it would fit/work! :banghead:
Any other idea's about the noise? 440/727

I have the Cat housing which is identical to the Source one.  I have heard the pumps were not working together.  I used a Napa replacement pump and all is well no noise and cools very well.

Thanks for the reply! Did you hear what the issue was ? Like different bolt pattern? Impeller too big? deep?

Can't recall, sorry.  If you do a search on Moparts, that might shed some light.  Maybe you could rig the fan belt to only turn the alternator and water pump at different times to isolate the sound. Do you have power steering?

Yes I have power steering , and was wondering if the pump is on it's way out? Maybe that's the noise I'm hearing? I guess I could start pulling belts off to isolate the noise.
I just looked at the Mopar Performance cataloge and with the Mopar aluminum pump it says it's identical to the cast iron pump only in aluminum?

Well if you find out it is the pump then there is no need to change the housing.  I know those Mopar pieces are pretty expensive.  Was the car running hot? Good luck on the isolation?

No I haven't bothered yet as I'm planning on changing the T-stat to a 180 ( from a 195) so while I'm doing that I'll swap out the water pump. I don't like the slight rock in the bearing the 440 source pump has . Driving 800 mile round trip to Carlisle... I don't want/need any headaches.

Yep it fits! Installed it today, I had to use a flapper wheel on an air grinder untill it fit in the bore  ::) but it did eventually fit.
It's raining now so I'll have to wait to take it out for a run to see if the noise is gone. I put in a 180 T-stat with 6 1/8" holes I drilled in it. I let it warm up and no leaks!  :2thumbs:  My only problem now is I need a switch that makes the HHR fan come on sooner. Now it doesn't come on till 195, then it cools it right down to 180 then turns off...... then heats up again to 195, then fan.... etc....
