Oil pan removal question 318
« on: June 20, 2011 - 10:49:38 PM »
I need to replace my oil pan it has a pinhole in it. Will it just drop out the bottom when I unbolt it? Or do I need to raise the motor up for clearance to get the pan to drop out. I`m guessing the steering link will need to be removed as well does this sound about right? I`m trying to decide if this is something I want to do myself or just take it to my mechanic.

Anything else I should know before I make an attempt at it,besides drain the oil out. I know at least that much? :bigshades:

The crank hangs below the pan rail.  I doubt the pan will drop low enough to clear.  You'll have to raise the engine up.

Are you planning an engine upgrade or rebuild in the near future?  If so, you could drain the oil and let the car sit for a day or two.  Then you could use some JB weld over the pin hole.  Clean the area really good first.  I'd try that before lifting the engine. :2cents:

I did do the JB weld repair and it looks to be holding but the hole is right near the drain plug. Once I change my oil it`s gonna start leaking again. I am planning an engine upgrade just not anytime soon. Starting to look like this repair might be one for my mechanic.  :(

You could always screw a screw into the pan to seal the hole...esp for a temp job.

I would still want some kind of sealant, between the pan and the screw, but the screw may be enough.

I just had my 360 pan welded, and I recomend it over a patch job, if at all possible.

if you remove the center link in the steering the pan will clear |& slide out , rotating the crank will help , the engine doesn`t need to be lifted
