STR-14 Intake manifold- I need an education
« on: June 22, 2011 - 09:43:23 PM »
I came across this intake on Moparts. Looks pretty impressive. I see different tops were available for it, 4bbl, 6 pack, 2-4 cross ram style.
I assume they only work at higher RPM's? Anyone know the height as compared to a stock intake?
I found this site on google
http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/edel.htm#B
I have a SY1intake for a SBC looks similiar in design?
Anyway post up what you know about this intake, I need an education, and like learning about( new to me) things.

I got a mopar book that shows in detail where to modify the intake to help the flow, and stop fuel puddling.  I had always heard they needed to be worked on to perform the best.  Doesnt look any taller than any single plane intake or stock 6pk set up

I see a lot of hits on Google for it...Looks like Al nailed it with the puddling problem.  Saw some mods mentioned.

I have had a brand new one of these with the crossram top sitting on my shelf for about 25 years now.  I was told they were pretty doggy until 3000 rpms, and the tops can crack easily when racing them.  I never did build that race car I wanted to, but couldn't bring myself to sell it because it looks so darn cool.

Cool! What top do you have for it?  Can you measure the overall thickness of it for me?
And if you want to sell it.....

He mentioned that it was a cross ram which is the two 4 barrel version where one carb is on the drivers side, the other on the passenger and they are mounted sideways so the linkage goes side-to-side as well.  At least that's how I remember these back when they were new...

I have one on my 6 pack Challenger.  It has the modifications that were required by the old Direct Connection Engine book.  I have the 3) 2-bbl Holleys that were a scat pack option.  They all have accelerator pumps and progressive linkage.  I have the 590 lift solid DC cam in the motor.  Compression is 12:1.  The transmission is the 833.  The set up would work with an automatic but it had to have a high stall converter.  When I restore my car, I plan to leave it on it.  A newer manifold would probably be more efficient, but this looks better.  It is taller than the regular 6 pack manifold.  I had the shaker hood on the car and the shaker scoop, when mounted,  was too high to close the hood.  It will fit under the magnum and the T/A hood.  The only tops I saw break were due to backfires when an engine let loose.

I had one... never used it on my junk! (no mods)... guy i know had to have it cause it looked cool(like most people) and bought it off me! and we put it on his very mild 440 auto ! think he had like a 2800 verter(not 100% sure) anyways it was a total dog on his car! he ended up re selling it! I believe if I recall the powerband started at 4000......  stay away from it  :2cents:

Ya I was wondering how "streetable" it would be?  Sure looks cool though! I like the looks of the 6-pack lid.

Alan, does it have a recommended power band in theMopar/DC book you have?

Maybe I can get to it this weekend.  It is pretty buried.  I have sketches of modifications that were done for the Direct Connection racing program by Tom Hoover.  The 6 pack set up was for super stock racing.  The manifold modifications were different for the 6 pack than it was for the other configurations.  You could not set the manifold up for the 6 pack and then go with the 2) 4's without a compromise in the set up power wise.  I know a guy who races with the manifold in an old Dodge.  I'll see if I can get a pic.  It is not really a street peice.  My motor used to run hot on the street.  12:1 compression did not help. Nothing was faster stop light to stop light.  Not even the Hemi's.  I never had the opportunity to do an open run with a Hemi. I wonder how it would run today with modern technology added.  I ran the tach drive distributer with the gold box. The N-50-15's would never hook up.  I still like the sound of the 590 lift solid cam even though there are more efficient cams out there today.  The motor is balanced and I used to run it out to 7,000 rpm. To run this motor today, gas will be around $8 a gallon.  The car may get 5 mpg.  If I were to restore the car with this motor, I doubt I could afford to drive it too far.  It would take $50 to go accross town and back.  It was fun while it lasted.  I plan to see how far stock I can go with the 440 and still run the manifold.

The factory cross ram manifold had a pivot that both sides of the carb linkage attached to.  It did go side to side.  The STR14 linkage goes from the from to the back,  (see pics above) The STR14 isn't a true crossram. It has a maze of chambers in it.  Yet, overall it is open inside.  I have my 6 pack car apart.  I had forgotten earlier that I had taken the manifold off for cleaning.  It was covered in silicone from vacuum leak checking.  I'll get pictures of it off the car.
