fender tags
« on: June 25, 2011 - 11:12:20 AM »
Was your fender tag on your car painted or unpainted? Mine was painted body color on my 72 chally. I have talked to some people who say it should be unpainted. Opinions???

Painted.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Thats what I think also Cody. I am thinking that sometimes the fender tag may not have been with the car yet and that is why some were unpainted. Did you get an in dash ash tray yet?

Found a good ash tray!   :2thumbs:

BTW, as far as I know all the fender tags were painted body color.

Everyone I have had has been painted on top.
Underneath is usually not painted.

What about the actual numbers/letters?  Are those painted also or are they white?
1970 Plymouth 'Cuda.  Matching numbers 440 U Code, 4 speed pistol grip, Rallye dash, AM 8 Track, Shaker hood, 15 inch rallye wheels, Dana 60 4.10, Super Track Pak.  One of 134 - 440 "U" coupes codes built in 1970 and one of 100 - 440 Super Track Paks built in 1970.

"usraptr" = United States raptor - bird of prey = United States Bald Eagle.  FYI, somebody else thought of it first so I had to drop the "O" in raptor.

Body color paint for all tags.  Paint the bottom (even though it might not have been) so it doesn't drip rust line from the under side when installed.

Yep, everybody has it right.  The tag was on the car when the factory painted it.  It did not get paint underneath.  But as Cody suggests, paint underneath to prevent rust. Just consider it an
"upgrade". PK

What the factory did on the assembly line was when the cars got ready for paint they removed the screw that is closest to the front of the car . Then the bent the tag upward at about a 90 degree angle, and painted the car. When finished the pushed the tag back and attached it back.Ever notice on a unrestored car that one screw is unpainted and the tag is not perfectly flat (like it was bent or something). When I look at a restored car I always look at the condition of the fender tag,if its perfect ,its always a tell tail sign that it has a aftermarket tag. Food for thought

On my 70 B assembly, they did not do the bend up to paint under it thing.

However, on my 71, clear as day what they did.  Exactly what you said.
On my 73 duster, it looks like they did it on that one also.

All my cars are B assembly.

This is new to me.  Never put it together like that.
Always seen that bend, but never realized that was the process.

There are a lot of B-bodies that came with unpainted tags.  Hamtramck built E-bodies came with painted tags.  I don't know about 1970 LA built cars.

Not sure that this was done on the B and A bodies or the E bodies built in the LA plant.

Well, since one of my three Hamtrack cars did not have this done to it, I would have to assume that this process was somewhat spotty.
Did it on a majority maybe but left out several during busy days.?

Been waiting for someone with a different plant car to chime in.
