My eBay purchased 74
« on: June 25, 2011 - 04:00:19 PM »
I was originally just keeping this in a file on my computer but instead decide to move it here:

Week 1:
I've been looking for a 70s Challenger for around three years. You don't see many Challengers on the market in Ohio, and the few I've seen tend to fall into one of two groups: Show Cars (which cost way more than my budget) or Project Cars (which usually are not drivable and/or are missing significant parts....like motors).

But last Saturday (5/14/2011), that search ended. I took the plunge and purchased a 1974 Dodge Challenger off eBay. The car is in very good shape with some minor rust on the quarters and some paint chips. It's also a numbers matching four speed with a four barrel.

Most of this week was spent arranging pick up, getting insurance straightened up, transferring the title, picking up a second set of keys and ordering a whole bunch of stuff off ebay.

Week 2: Parts begin to trickle in.

I replaced the missing 360 Four Barrel logo on the hood, got some floor mats and a new trunk liner.  I also did some work on the hood hinge I replaced the missing bolt and got it to close much better.

Week 3:

This week I replaced the antenna.  The original mast was broken off and the nut was horribly mauled.

I also replaced the missing rocker panel molding on the drivers side.  It was much more difficult than I anticipated. I have a replacement for the passenger side, but I didn't get around to it.

Week 4:

Got the rocker panel molding installed on the passenger side.  This required bringing the bottom of the fender out a bit, nothing major. I also ordered a replacement for the manual choke that was installed on the car.

Week 5:

Did a lot of yard work this week because the weather was good so the Challenger got neglected.  I did have a set of DODGE letters arrive for the hood.  I didn't have time to install them, but I couldn't wait to see what it would end up looking like, so I grabbed a piece of cardboard for a mockup.

Week 6:

A little interior work.  I installed a replacement knob for the Rear Speaker fader.  I also pulled the damaged passenger vent control and replaced it with a new one.  And finally with the help of a template, I installed the DODGE letters back on the hood.  I decided to take some step by step photos.  It turned out pretty good but the "O" seems to be a bit off.  I believe this was a problem with the letter itself as I had to do some clean up on the studs to get them to fit correctly.  I might go back and adjust it.
