I happened upon a video in another thread about off idle stumble.  The solution was to adjust the pump nozzles.  I had heard this before, but this thread included 2 videos that detailed just how easy it was to swap them.  So I picked up a set of them and spent a day trying them. 

Initially the carb had a 25 nozzle in it (which happens to be the smallest one in my kit).  It had a stumble like this:

I ended up settling on a 32 nozzle.  And the stumble is nearly gone.  Then the question becomes which cam should I be using?  The carb has w White 218 in it, using position 1.

This is how it comes off idle:
White position 1


Switching to postion 2:
White position 2


So position 1 seems better.  Using this chart


It seems like I might want to investigate a pink cam?  Am I reading that right?    :feedback:

are these videos of the car in gear under load or just in neutral.

If they are in Neutral, I would suggest takign that car for a spin and see if the off idle hesitation has improved.

Those videos were taken in neutral just sitting in the garage.  When I did the squirter nozzle swap, I did take it out and make sure I had the right one in there.  The car had a much better feel with the larger nozzle.  Once I get a cam or two that sounds good in the garage I'll take it out and see what feels best on the road.

But realistically, I don't often go from idle to WOT out on the street, so the garage testing will probably get me close enough :)  I just enjoy fiddling with it.

Really not much change...to my ear, white 1 sounds the best so I'll leave that in for a bit and revisit it after putting a few more miles on it.

Thanks for posting the pump cam info! :wave: I'm just messing with that stuff myself at the moment! Saves a lot of guessing! :grinyes: :2thumbs: I've got #40 squirter in the secondaries and am still getting a split second of lean on the A/F ratio gauge.

Are you using the solid screw or are you using a hollow screw?  I seem to remember 40 is the borderline where Holley recommends switching to the hollow screw.

The carb I'm using ( quickfuel) comes with hollow squirter screws, the holley #40 squirters also come with hollow replacement screws. So I either need to go bigger or try playing around with the cams? And/or adjust the float level up a bit on the secondary side?

I bought a complete kit of nozzles, cams, screws, gaskets, pump diaphragms, etc.  It had both solid screws and hollow ones.  The nozzles go from 25 to 50 something.  It wasn't cheap, but it's nice to have everything in one kit and not have to worry about buying the wrong nozzles and then having to order the correct ones and wait on shipping.

Switching either the nozzles or the cam on the Holley is pretty quick...so I don't know which to tell you to play with.   But hey at least it's an excuse to start the car and mash the throttle :)

Took it for a ride today to visit some relatives, probably the farthest I've ever driven the car.  Throttle response was greatly improved by the nozzle change and accelerator cam swap.  Definitely worth the time.

Thanks again Jamiez for the pump cam info. I had no idea where to start with them. Like no idea which one pumped the most etc....
I ended up with 42 squirter in the rear with blue pump cam in the #2 position. No lean bog now! :burnout: :2thumbs:

Glad it helped Brad, that's a pretty aggressive cam, guess your car is hungry!

I swapped in some new front shocks a few weeks back but didn't get around to driving on them until just this past week.  I went with QA1 double adjustable, pricey but the ride quality is well worth it.  The old Monroe shocks had less than 200 miles on them, but they are just OE replacement.  I did QA1s in the rear and loved the adjustably.


On the downside, now that the car has better shocks and actually runs better (due to carb work), I did some "spirited" driving and discovered a new problem....


Tire rub :( The 295's back there are just too much if they get a little low on pressure and don't granny all the corners.  I've ordered a new pair of 275s to replace them.  I went with BFG TAs because I didn't want to swap the fronts or run mismatched brands, but the Cooper Cobras had the RWL look and were available in the right size.  Anyone run those?

Maybe...prefer not to...and the passenger side tire has had a gash in it since I bought it.  So I always planned on replacing it.
