Dies out at idle
« on: June 26, 2011 - 06:45:05 PM »
Ok guys...need your help.

As long as I have had this car, it has idled rough etc..I know I have a big cam in it....but at some point I was able to find a nice middle ground as far as idle and performance, etc.

Now for the last few weeks I did notice that it was idling a LITTLE lower than usual.....so I got back into shifting into neutral at lights and all was well...no driveability issues aside from that.

Well, today it started out great and I was on her pretty hard going up a long hill to pass......got to the top and onto another road....no issues.......pulled over to use the phone...she was idling ok...then as I was on the phone (maybe 45 seconds of being stopped) she just stalled out.

Starts right back up and idle rose to about 1200 rpms, then slowly came down to below 500 and then died again.

Rinse and repeat.

I drove a bit more and then pulled over to tinker with it.  I saw that when I would feather the throttle a bit, gas would come out the squirters as expected.   I dont believe there is any gas dribbling out of them when it is sitting at idle, but it seemed like it took a whole for the squirting /dribbling to stop when you first reva nad let go of the throttle....which makes the idle go up and saty there for a short time before it drops down again...but saw nothing else out of place.

Well, decided to drive out to the show we were on our way to as-is and hope for the best...so about 30 miles.  Most of it stop and go traffic...what a PITA. Had to constantly feather the gas and rev it to above 1100 rpms to get her to not stall out....

The car sat for about 90 minutes at the show and then we left...same stuff again in local traffic.  So we came home an all-highway route.  Couldnt have run better on the highway.  Good power and such.

Got back around home and same crap.....pulled into my garage and she idled low, around 400 rpms for a good 45 seconds or 1 minute and then acted like she was gonna die again so I goosed it once, let it die down some and then shut it down.

Now...Back on 6/12 I installed ref #10 in the edelbrock tuner guide for the 1405 carb I have....and it ran great, including idle, or at least as good as it always had idle wise.  But for the last month or so (even before that mod)  I have noticed it did want to idle a smidge lower, like I said.

Does this sound like it is leaning itself out at idle?  My wife was in her car behind us the whole way and said she saw NO smoke at all.

I am thinking maybe idle air bleeds or fuel passages for the idle circuit?  It was such a sudden onset of the issue I am thinking dirt somewhere but I have a decent fuel filter in place....when I had the top of the carb off on the 12th the bowls were clean.

Whats the best way to clean those passages? Do I need to pull the carb apart and soak it/blow air through it?

Or is there a faster easier way?

I hate to go pulling the thing apart less than 2 weeks before Carlisle..... :pullinghair:

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance yunz guys.

Well Eddy Carbs & low idle vacuum rarely work well together , the eddy cannot be tuned to work with low vacuum .
so here are my thoughts First is the vcarb getting hot enough to boil the fuel , an alum deflecter plate & as well as a blocked heat crossover can make a big difference .
The other issue is this , first the metering rods have to stay down at idle in gear so use the weakest spring available & trim them a little if nessisary .
Next there is a small hole at the top of the idle circuit , on Holley style carbs this restiction can be removed & smallerones installed , on the eddy you are forced to insert some wire into the hole , this should make the idle circuit more responsive & yes you will need to adjust the idle screws
I hope this helps
Neil

Thanks Neil....

Thing is, up until today it had no issue idling really....a little low lately but it would idle and not die.

Can i shoot air into the idle screw holes with the carb on the car withoit damaging anything?  wondering if there is gunk in there.

Also, after doing a search, I saw that some folks had found that replacing the pickup in the dist. cured their ills.....I have a new spare pickup...how does the reluctor wheel come off? Didnt seem to just want to pull off, really....

Just had about the same problem on my car. Bad idle and a bog on acceleration.
Checked everything out and found a bad vacuum line. Reconnected it and everything is all good.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Yeah, I looked for vac lines etc once i got home.

I did find a vacuum cap that was on its way out but changed that and no difference.

Again, the car was fine for about 10 miles or so....then, after a bit of spirited driving, it started acting up.

Well, I am hoping I got the problem solved.

To answer my own question, its safe to blow air thru the idle screw holes with the carb on the car....or so it would seem.  LOL

I removed the two screws and recorded exactly how many turns they were to full in.

Blew air thru the left hole and saw gas burble up out of the small (air?) tube on the top of the carb, that same side.  Did the same to the other and nothing burbled.

Hmmmm.

So I put a few drops down the right tube and let it sit...then more air....nothing.

Well, then i found a spray gun tip cleaning tool and stuck it down in the two tubes and shot air thru each hole.....

Now I was getting gas mist thru the throat of the carb, but no more burbles on the left side....did that a few times, put her back together and.....dare I say it.....so far so good.

took her for a ride around town and got her warmed up.....idles real good now in drive .....didnt need to shift to neutral at all....and she didnt stall out or even act like she was going to, not once.

 :woohoo:

I am hoping it really is this easy and not some crazy heat-soak related issues.  The car sat for an hour and a half earlier today and I was still having the issue right after......it sat about 2 hours this time before I tried again, so pretty close.

But I guess the real test will be next long, hard ride.

...the saga continues I guess till then....LOL
