Tachometer - How does it work?
« on: June 27, 2011 - 11:11:29 AM »
Where is the sensor that gives it it's input?  How does it know what the current RPM is?  Is it electric or mechanical?

Background is mine is no longer working and this all being new to me I just need to be pointed in the right direction for troubleshooting.  I recently did some wiring around the ignition coil positive side to install a flamethrower kit so that is a potential point of change if the tach has to do with that.

Thanks!

The Tach gets its signal from the "-" side of the ignition coil.

as above...

there is no sensor...the tach is electrical and works by counting the number of ignition pulses

It connects to the negative side of the coil, and, altho I did not look for a '73, I suspect the wire that went to the coil was gray with a stripe on it....

There are mechanical tachs that use a cable driven gear just like a speedometer, but they are few and far between and it would be obvious if you had one of these because of the large cable housing that comes off the distributor shaft that runs in to the back of the tach.  However, the large majority of tachs that are sold and installed, including the factory style units, are electrical in construction.

If you've recently made changes to the wiring around the coil, you could have potentially disconnected your tach.

Very simple layout.  Wire goes from the "-" post on the coil straight to the back of the tach, and a switched 12V source goes to the back of the tach.  You should have 2 wires hooked to the back of the tach.  If it looks like it is hooked up correctly, then you probably need to pull the tach and get it rebuilt.

Thank you thank you thank you.   :drunk:

I know exactly the wire--I accidentally cut it at 3am when I misread the +/- signs on the coil.   :-[  After looking at the wiring diagram I realized that one went to the dash.  I'm guessing I just didn't join it back up properly.  Easy enough fix.

For what it's worth, it is common for the original tachs to need rebuilt. It may not be your connections.

Confirmed it was the cut.  Recut and soldered and it's fine now.  Thanks again for the insight guys!   :drunk:
