tune-up instructions decal
« on: June 28, 2011 - 10:45:34 AM »
Hi Guys.

I'm still in the process of restoring my 1970 dodge challenger deputy, and I've arrived at the detailing part of the car.
When looking through some old pics, I noticed a sticker that was on the passenger side inner fender. Unfortunately i don't have clear pics of the decal, because There weren't any digital camera's when I was disassembling my ride.
I do however copied the text on the sticker before I had everything blasted. It says the following:

Tune-up instructions
This engine is equipped with a "kar-kit" emission control system
the distributor vacuum spark advance mechanisme must remain De-activated
according to special instructions in owners manual.  engine timing and
carburator adjustment must be set according to the following "kar-kit"
specifications see manual in glove compartment for detailed procedures

1966-1970 vehicles

1' BTC or more retarded          -                  same as MFG. specs
more than 7 1/2' BTC              -                   set at 1/2 of MFG. spec
All other settings                     -                   set at 1' BTC
carburator adjust idle speed and mixture to MFG-spec. If idle mixture is not specified
adjust to lean best idle

1955-1965 vehicles
timing         Set timing according to manufacturer's specifications
carurator    Adjust idle speed to 600 RPM in drive for automatic transmissions
and 700 rpm in neutral for manual transmissions
Adjust idle mixture to 1,5% co- or 14:1 AFR. if not possible
                  adjust to lean best idle

Check cooling system for leaks. Defective cap and plugging every 120000 miles

Air quality products inc. 1976   AQP 229 11/76           patent pending

This was the full text on the sticker. If anyone has some knowledge on this sticker please feel free to share it with me.

Thanks,

Antoon

Performance Car Graphics sells a lot of stickers like that.  Check out their site and see if they make that one.  They have pictures of all the stickers they sell.  Also, I know ECS Automotive has been coming out with a lot of stickers.  They sell kits with all the sticker for the car in it.  Check them out too.

Thanks.

I allready looked at the ECS site, since they've helped me in the past with the VIN decal that goes in the door. But I didn't find any info on this particular sticker. I mailed PCG for some info, so maybe I'll get lucky.
It seems though, that it's a sticker from some system, not made by Chrysler, to enhance the emissions of the engine. Does anybody have an idea what this Kar Kit system could be?

The kar kit is an aftermarket smog control device - it wasn't stock. They were installed when you had your car smogged. Personally, I wouldn't put it back on unless you are going for a "period" restoration - plus it makes your car drive horribly since you retard the inital timing and disable the vacuum advance.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Ok thanks for the info.
I wasn't planning on installing this Kar-kit device. It wasn't on th ecar when I bought it, just the decal, and I wondered what it meant.

Thanks,

Antoon
