Gentleman, I have been going over your remarkable repository of knowledge and  wanted to introduce my self. I am an engineer, young and love the challenger. I had a 2010 that i was renting for a bit ofter a  bad accident in my Mazda 6. (fantastic car) After driving it i realized screw reinvented lets go old school back to what my father grew up with. OK he was a mustang guy and he hates the fact i love the challenger but i cant fault him for making a mistake once in a while can i? So any way im trying to put a price list together of every thing i could need to rebuild and make the absolute bad a$$ ground shaking sob that ever prowled the streets. i am looking for a 1970 Challenger i must do a bit more research to find out exactly but the bigger the engine the better. I am very technical both engineer and it and i do have some of the income but like i said this is research for the moment and perhaps make a decision on starting the hunt in a couple weeks.

Welcome to the site!  I guess the first thing you need to do is find the car and lets see what we have to start with.  Then we can put together a list of what it will take to make the ground shaking SOB you are looking to build.  I assume you are thinking HEMI?  Or maybe a stroker big block? 

Either way it will be very cool!

Thank you for the welcomes guys how ever i must point out im not your standard kid who is fresh out of school and just want some one elses hard work to say hey its mine. This is not ment to sound offensive and i am sorry if it does. I am a proud person and i take a lot of pride in what i do. I have 20k to start with its just at the moment i am familurising my self with the mechanics is all. Unfourtunantly i will need to go auto trans do to the wreck has fractured my ankle and doc said no gunsno repelling and no stick shift for a long time. Plus i like to cruise with power lol. So i spose that may be where i start. Oh all black too i dont own any other car color. Ps im a programmer not an english teacher so spelling is bad and spell checks turned off lol

I'm no engineer, but as an engineering enthusiast hopefully I can help you steer your way towards a car that will fit you well.  Choosing carefully now will help you avoid the automotive purgatory of a stalled restoration and the depression that follows!

Step 1: Decide now what you want the finished car to be.  Before you buy one single part for the car decide what you want in the end.  A high dollar numbers matching restoration?  A highly modified corner carver built with the latest technology to upgrade older Mopars to hang with the modern cars?  Or a drag car that can eat up a 1/4 mile in no time. You can ultimately blend elements of the three but to start you should know what road you're going down.

a: Restoration.  Find a numbers matching car and restore it back the way it came from the factory.  If it's a green 440-6 car with 4 speed then so be it.  You are now a curator of this exibit and should maintain it as such.  But in return, the value of your car will maintain or rise as well.
b: Modification for handling: This too is a very expensive option since it involves much aftermarket parts and fabricating.  This method can be done in stages but sometimes the whole front and rear suspension and portions of the frame could be replaced in this scenario.  Some people repower them with modern Hemi engines and drivetrains.  Even a custom interior is not off limits.  It blends the best of the old with the cutting edge of the new and if built properly will give you a similar road experience to a modern car.  The draw back is that some people at shows may not share your vision or enthusiasm for your project.
c: Modification for racing:  This is one of the oldest types of modified cars you'll find.  Roll cage, gutted out and tubbed.  A lot of the time they're found without engines (for obvious reasons) which allows you to repower them however you want.  Supercharged Hemi?  Sure!  The goal is going fast and the car is almost secondary.

OK now having narrowed down your main goal, you may want to consider mixing and matching what you want.  Now on to car selection.  This depends on how much work you can do yourself, or how many friends with shops owe you favors.  Metal work can get really expensive really quick.  You can buy an Challenger bare shell or replace quarters, trunks and floors that are rusted but it all takes time, patience and money.  The less time and patience you have, the more money it costs.  That said, I recommend finding the least rusty starting point you can.  If you're building a modified car and are not concerned about originality you might consider looking into a 72-4 Challenger and having the grille, marker lights and tail lights switched if it saves you money.  I do NOT recommend picking up a numbers matching big money car and modifying it.  In the end you'll have lowered the value of the car and maybe upset someone who would have enjoyed the car as an original.

Time and cost:  This is hard to figure since it depends on what you started with.  Picking up a rust free 73 Challenger and converting it to what you want may cost less than an original 70 rust bucket.  An all out resto of a big money car can easily end up double or triple what it's worth when done.  And of course it takes far longer to come up with the special NOS parts that a true restoration requires.

In the end it's your car.  20k will get you a good start down whatever road you decide.  Just choose wisely!  It will help you further on down the road.

To build a 'ground pounder'  I would start by finding the nicest rust free 70 you can find for as cheap as you can find it.  If you plan on building a modified car stay away from R/T's, T/A's or other special factory built cars.  Find a rust free body.  When you find something, post pics and ask us about it.  We will be glad to give our opinions on the car.

i do appreciate the true beauty of a factory restored car but my creative and tinker side said nope to easy you are not doing it. Currently im finishing up a new training program and once that is sold ill have the money for the whole package deal. my next question is any suggestions on where to start looking and on the matching number i agree no point destroying a work of art to create a new master piece. any location is fine i have arranged for a garage and the guys at my local fab shop love me since i bring them all my jobs as is. i live out side of richmond va so i spose closer the better but as i said no big deal. im currently working with a full 3d model of the car to plan it out to final cruise. That is what im looking for mean as all get up but still that cruiser that turns the heads. also again thank you for all the help so far to just help me make up my mind on how i want to do this.;

you are on to something lol about the 73/74 wouldnt be difficult to mod it a bit to a 70. i spose if i could find a rust free one i would surely consider it. thank you for the suggestion :cheers: :ebay:

oooo a fellow programmer.... but a little update on the search to 1970 glory. i have to put my search on hold for the time being. my the rest of my funds i had went right out the door last night when i had 3 more medical bills become 3rd notice from the wreck. I really don't like insurance people and i hope my new lawyer is a blood thirsty wretch to destroy them. so 40k all saved up for a house and 2 cars has gone out the window plus the set aside now as well.  :banghead: :swear: :villagers: :bricks1:
