Battery Slowly Draining Help
« on: July 02, 2011 - 08:51:05 AM »
Hello
My battery is slowly draining on my 72 318 Sebring.
The battery is 9 months old.
When fully charged  ( Charged with a  Battery charger ) it reads  12.4 V  according to my multimeter Tested at the poles.
When the engine in running ( Idle ) it reads 12.2 V at the poles and 12.1 V at the connectors
After driving approx 100 miles the battery reads 12.2 V and 12.1 V at idle. again 12.1 V at the connectors.
Eventually the car is hard to start. You know what happens next.  :stomp:

Altinator ???
Any suggestions before I replace the altinator ?

Thanks in advance

Fred..

Well, the battery is obviously not being charged by the alternator so you have to determine if the alternator is bad, or the regulator is bad.

:iagree: it should be 13 to 14 v when idling ,,check to see if your getting better voltage at the alternator post

Fred..

Save that 40 year old regulator. It might be better than the new one you're buying. Always keep a spare in the glove compartment along with a balast resistor.
