trunk battery, tape cables or not
« on: July 03, 2011 - 08:46:32 AM »
my battery will be placed in the trunk on the driver`s side.  Both pos. and neg. cable run to the enginebay.
I was wondering if I can tape up the batterycables in 1 harness with the other (all new) wiring running to the trunk
( taillight ,fuelsender ,defogger)

I don't see that being an issue. The only thing that comes to mind is clearance once the wiring come down the inner fender well. There is a triangle shaped support brace to get around which make take some modication getting the rear door panel to fit.

Hey Bart,

Long time no see!

What size of cables did you use? I planned to get some this afternoon, at Boes welding in Almelo.

Third week of july we will work hard on my chally, with a team of five. Feel free to visit us!

Hey, Can I give you a call tonight, about how things are?

Dutch,

Any reason you are running the negative cable to the engine bay?  Most people ground to the rear frame then run a separate ground from the engine to the body up front.

Why are you locating the battery on the drivers side?  Driveline torque requires the extra weight be located on the passenger side.
As others have suggested I grounded the battery negative cable to the unibody near the trunk torsion springs.  Up front the engine has two ground straps to the unibody, with paint removed at each location to insure good ground.  One of the grounds is from the mounting bolt for the voltage regulator to the intake manifold so V.R. is grounded to alternator and engine.    :2cents:

Half way down is a pic of Mopar super stock trunk:

Ditto on the passenger side.

Can be quite a bit of voltage drop from front to rear so I agree with your prof.

I generally run the neg cable at least as far as the trans tailhousing to get the best ground possible

I agree with the location. I did think about that, but I tested how much the car would come down with weight in the trunk. I threw 2 bags of cement (25kg bags) in there and the car dropped exactly 1 mm.  At that point I made the decision to use the shortest route for the cables and that`s along the driverside. Maybe I`m wrong but I thought keeping the wiring as short as possible would be at least as important.  :dunno:

Bart,

One of the guys who's going to get my electrical ready, told that the extra cable, the negative one, will give a lot of resistance. Your  circuit might give problems if the cables are a little too small.

I know you usually stick with your original plan, but you might consult your technician about this.

All good points. Using a good quality/size wire is important. IMO, #2 AWG or better. #4 is common when just within the engine bay. Welding cable or if you know somebody in the motor winding business, motor lead wire.
Good wire will eliminate the first two points as a source of problems and allow you to do the third if you wish.
I would ground the -ve close to the battery location as well as the negative cable run to the engine.

:clueless: Now what was the original question?  :dunno:  Oh ya, running them with the other harness wires seems like a good idea to me. Out of site and tidy.

for trunk mounted batteries, I would not use anything smaller than 1/0 cable.
