Steering Column Question
« on: July 03, 2011 - 12:37:46 PM »
I had the column rebuilt {sort of}. That was 1 of 2 problems I had with businesses during this process. But anyway , can the column be put back together 180 degrees off? My steering wheel spokes are at 10 and 2 instead of 4 and 8. So is it a case of the column being put together wrong or did the alingment guy get the alingment wrong? The gear box is keyed sort of where the coupler slides on so it cannot be rotated 180 degrees.

There may be more than one answer to this question, I seem to remember someone had a crush-can on wrong somehow. http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=74863.msg763891#msg763891
In my case I did nothing to the steering column and tried to center the steering box prior to reassembly but found my wheel was way off. After revisiting the coupler to box and finding the center of the box aligning the wheels straight with the tie rods adjusted equally I was off about 30-degrees. I had to unbalance the tie rod adjustment so that the passenger side was a bit longer than the divers side.

splines at the steering wheel end of my column have no master spline....I just pulled the wheel off and turned it upside down

the couple can be installed 180* out , you may have to sldie the column back & remove the coupler & reinstall it the other way
