Not the way to spend the 4th
« on: July 05, 2011 - 08:12:42 AM »
What a miserable day....................spent in Akron General hospital.

Pam's nephew was in an auto accident Sunday night with his girl friend, they were driving home after attending a local area fireworks display. Not completely clear on details but the general crux of what happened is that as traffic thined out they were able to speed up. They were going around 50 mph (which I think was about 5 mph over ? ) and was nearing a four way stop intersection. With a couple cars ahead of him, he went to put on his bakes when his "flip flop/sandle" style shoe some how got caught around the gas pedal and he couldn't get his foot over to the brake pedal, well at least soon enough to stop before rear ending the car in front of him. Get this, although not life threatening they both were life lifted to the hospital, I guess because of distance and the amount of traffic in the area, plus the traffic jam the wreck caused.  They both had surgery yesterday, he had a compound break on his right leg and a fractured knee cap, she had some fractured ribs due I guess from where the seat belt kept her from possibly being ejected from the car due to impact, she also may have a small hole in her one lung from the rib injury.  Good news, both are now OK and expected to eventually heal and recover.

We have no idea of what or how the people in the other car may have been injured. But honestly due to the injuries Eric and his girlfriend experienced I don't know how the other people escaped with lesser or less serve injuries. I'm really concerned about what he may be facing in a legal sense, really all I can think of is the possibility of kids being in the back seat of the car he hit.

Sadly we actually are about all Eric has for a family, his dad passed away a little over two years ago, his mother has some mental disabilities (she dosen't know about this yet), he has no siblings and besides Pam and I he has one cousin, our one daughter. We see him once maybe twice a year and he is always moving around between jobs and women. Due to his mother's situation and his dad seperating/divorcing her when Eric was about 2 years old I feel he has had no real parenting or direction in his life. A good hearted kid (about 30) but basically lives day to day with not knowing or caring what the next day holds. I do credit him with he always seems to have a job but I think most of his income goes to child support from his past, the job he has had over the last few years was as a press operator in a couple large printing companies, but who knows if they will hold his job until he is fully rehabed from his injuries?

Just needed to share................yesterday spent in a hospital during his surgery because we felt we needed to be there for him when he came out of the recovery room was not the way to celebrate the 4th of July holiday. I hope he has decent insurance, we can't help out very much, certainly not the amount of money he is facing in medical and possibly legal bills.

Sorry to hear about your weekend. How quickly "stuff" happens, just can never take back those few moments in time, hope all goes well. You and Pam are great examples of family support. Take care.

Wow sad news!  I usually kick off my flip flops and drive bare foot.   Hope everyone is OK.   :walkaway:
