Lost/found tools
« on: July 05, 2011 - 01:16:56 PM »
Sometime in the early 70's I was working on my Barracuda.  I borrowed my Dad's brand new Vise-grip pliers to hold a nut under the car while I turned the bolt from inside.  Finished the job and I went on my merry way.  Well,a couple of weeks later dad asked me if I had seen his pliers and I told him that I had no idea where they were.  He was pretty annoyed and suspicious,  :stomp: but I stood my ground. :dunno:

Fast forward to 1996 and 100,000 miles.  I was under the car doing something and, you guessed it, there were the pliers, still hanging on!
Poor little guys had survived years of winter snows, summer holidays, one accident, numerous oil changes and lubes, exhaust replacement and wheel changes.  There they were, wondering when I was going to finally rescue them!

I never did tell my Dad about it though.   :angelwings: I kinda wish I had, he would have got a laugh out of it.

BTW, they still work fine, thanks Dad!

Amazing they were not noticed before.  Where were the pliers attached?

I am trying to think of anything nearly that cool that I have done , I was removing a tranny from a dodge truck in the wreckers , {A833 OD] on the top of the bolt for the cross member betweenthe frame & cab I was having a horrible time getting my wrench onto the bolt only because there was a wrench still on the bolt from who knows how long ago , I have found numerous wrenches & pliers left in wrecking yards but I paid for it dearly one day when I set my toolbox on a car & walked around a corner out of sight for only a minute or so & my whole tool kit was stolen , cost me close to $1000 to replace all the tools  :pullinghair:

good story,,I did find a wrench once about a month later on a tranny I had installed in a truck that was still on the bolt that was on the cross member,,and I have found sockets that had been dropped and seem to have disappeared some by me others not after having pulled the motor  and there was the socket seemingly laying in the open but could not find when the motor was in

Cool story. I'm sure vise grip would love to hear it. Never had anything that happen to me, other than having all my 9/16 sockets disappear and pulling of a kick panel and finding one that someone else had left.

I used to inspect cars back in the 90's for CSAA. Inheirited quite a few Snap On, Mac, and Matco tools left on the cars in the engine compartment.

Seniors moment....I know them all too well!  :clueless:

Needed my hacksaw to cut one bolt.  I looked high and low, finally deciding that I had lost it, so I decided to go buy another one.  I rushed out and bought a good one for $30.

I cut the one bolt then looked around my shop to decide where to put it so I wouldn't lose this one.  Hmmm, I think I will hang it up on my tool board...right here on top of the one I thought I had lost!!   :pullinghair:
