I bought a box that was a"rebuilder" and a kit, when I got it back to Australia and dismantled even the extension housing was cracked inside, the gears are badly pitted, the only thing worth saving is the main housing. The guy I bought it from has come to the party which helps.
Ray Bell in Queensland is supposed to have a few A833 boxes and parts, I was hoping to get up there myself for a holiday and also check out what he had but that is on hold at the moment.
Ray's email address is    raybell@racingphoenix.com  I only know him through Mopar Market forum.

OK cool. I know who Ray is. Never met him, but am familiar with his name on the forums.

Cheers.

OK, got a line on an A-833 OD box, and best of all it's here in Aus.

Do have a question though ...

If I decide I don't like the ratios, or they happen to be buggered, is there anything about the OD box that would inhibit me buying a standard ratio gear-set or even a Passon OD gear-set and dropping them in?

If you don't like the ratios and buy a passon OD gearset, put it into an all steel case and sell the OD complete.  The 1st gear is super low. I had the 833 OD in front of a set of 3:23 and 3:55. rear gears and behind a 440. Good for taking off on hills.

Don't try to race anyone on the highway. Normally you would downshift to 3rd and punch it. In this case it is like leaving it in 4th and flooring it. A Passon gear set does the same thing.  Gear spread is a little wide but who cares. It isn't a 5 speed.  Your top speed will be unbeatable though.

Good post Russ,I am interested in this kit as well,I was wondering if the gear set came complete with bearings and gaskets so sent Jamie an email for the cost to Australia,he hasnt got back to me on the cost yet but said you only get the gears so bearings and gaskets are an option,I wont use the O/D aluminium box as a mate split the box with the cluster on a big rpm change, let me know if you go the 3 plus 1 path.

you might save some shipping costs if you orded 2 sets & sent them to one place assuming you are not too far apart

As CP said - I have one. Total satisfaction, zero issues. Uses his "special" oil though. With the pitch angle and coarsness of the teeth (Hemi style) it sounds like an old tractor gearbox idling in neutral hot. Noise goes away at 1000RPM. Getting quieter with further use. Mr Passon told me he would guarantee this product to 1000HP through it. That says enough. Friend and I in the same town bought one each at the same time. His is behind an LA408. He runs 3.91 rear and I have 3.73 for the 0.80 OD ratio in the box.

You also have to run the 18 spline clutch as CP mentioned plus the Hemi throwout bearing. Bend over while you are paying for the throwout bearing.

I just picked up a used A-833 this weekend and am planning on getting the Passon Hemi OD kit and swapping it myself.  Does anyone know the difference in weight between a complete cast iron and aluminum transmission?  I still need to find a bell housing and a bunch of other parts to complete the conversion but I'm happy to have a start.
