I'm sure there are some more modern grinds that will give you more power then an old  purpleshaft.  However, I've heard that the stock 340 cam is a decent cam for a 318.  I've got one in the engine I'm putting in my Challenger.  I had it so I used it.

Lunati VooDoo XX302 grind for small blocks

Chryco,
Upgrading my 318 to 302 heads 1.88s and 1.60s...

Current stats (you critiqued my cam choice so now is your chance to proove your point Chryco)
318ci w/stock short block and heads
Comp Cams XE256H Duration 256/268  Lift447/455
Edelbrock Performer Intake
Chrysler Electronic Ignition
Road Demon 625cfm Vac Sec Carb.

So you recomended a look at the Voodoo's, but then this guy 6Paktogo you were a little more agressive I think with the 302 grind (which I'm not seeing as a VooDoo, but a Streetmaster)
Lunati outlines it as:
Hydraulic Flat Tappet. Good cam for Pro Street applications with 340-360 c.i. motors. Needs 2500-3000 RPM stall converter, headers, 10:1 com- pression and 3.50+ gearing. Rough idle.
•Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 285/285
•Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 235/235
•Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .507/.507
•LSA/ICL: 108
•Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
•RPM Range: 2500-6200
•Includes: Cam Only

If I look at the VooDoos I see two options, the 702 as a bit more agressive...
Mid level performance street cam with excellent drivability. Works well with stock type exhaust manifolds and dual plane intake with mild 4 bbl carb.
Improved valve springs and roller rockers recommended.
•Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
•Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 220/226
•Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .475/.494
•LSA/ICL: 112/108
•Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
•RPM Range: 1400-5800

OR

on the milder side the 701:
Hydraulic Flat Tappet. Best mild performance cam. Works well in EFI applications with performance chip. Makes approximately 19" vacuum at idle. Great for performance marine and heavy towing applications. Great street rod cam. Slightly noticeable idle, works with stock converter, A/C, power brakes and stock springs in most cases.
 •Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 256/262
•Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 213/220
•Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .454/.475
•LSA/ICL: 112/108
•Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
•RPM Range: 1000-5500

With the new heads I was leaning towards the 702....  as you recomended more lift, shorter duration...  and a non-chevy grind...

I plan to run a TCI A904 with Sizzler Torque Converter and 3.55s behind it.

lead me to water so I may drink...

I would agree with the 702 grind
not sure what the stall is with the Sizzler converter , but it would have to be higher than stock around 1600 rpm so you will be into the powerband with the 702 cam by the time the converter locks up , + as you can see you have similar duration to the XE Comp but with  approx. 10% better gain in lift , just make sure the valve clearance to the piston is adequate . Are you porting the heads at all ?

Thanks Chryco,
The shop who is doing the valves asked if I wanted them to do some porting....   I looked online and saw some that have been worked and think I can pull it off at home, or should I let them?  Recommendations?

Just to to turn the heads around  (no porting) they said $450 labor plus parts, and quoted stainless valves at a buck cheaper than Summitt's Sealed Pros...

As for the TC "Expected RPM Stall Speeds:  Small Block:1500 to 1700 or 300-400 RPM increase in stall over stock, Quicker acceleration
Improved low end power & smoother running in stock or mildly modified engines".

I do a lot of port work to heads , some is easy matching intake & exhaust openings , removing the lip behind the valves but do not taper the exhaust floor leave it as vertical as possible to drive the air flow to the roof , also making a wing shape around the guide can not only reduce drag & turbulence but can speed up one side enhancing swirl . depends what you feel capable of doing . cleaning guides & seats seems ok for the heads assuming that is what they are doing .

Similar product , Hughes can be difficult to deal with , Engle used to grind all of Hughes cams , no warranty from Hughes , no problem from engle .
