converter and 727 don't match
« on: July 21, 2011 - 08:44:27 AM »
I have a coan racing 40215 converter.
It won't slide on the 727.
It seems the oil-pump rotor doesn't have enough claerance for the shaft of the converter to slide in.

Can we fix this, or do we need a different size of rotor-stator for te pump? Doesn't look like the rotor is assembled the wrong way....

Time to contact Coan to make sure you ordered the right converter for your year trans

Already sent an e-mail. The converter was dealer-sold. The tranny was rebuilt by another shop,  before I turned to my speedshop with all my business, to make sure these situations don't occur.

Let's wait and see.

Stand the trans on it's tail. Take all of the pump bolts off. Use a slide puller at the pump's bolt holes to pull the pump off or pop it off from the back side.  Try fiting the pump on the converter and see what the hang up is.  This beats all of the spinning and pushing.

When you reinstall the pump, make sure that you didn't knock some of the clutches out of alignment or the pump will not seat all the way down.

Put the pump rotor "tabs" at the 12 0'clock and 6 o'clock positions (straight up and down) . Put the slots on the converter hub up and down to match.See if it will go in then.

I'll give it a try, tomorrow!

I'm a bit worried, though: If the nocks will slide in, I won't be able to turn the converter around, I guess?

This wednesday I will take both parts to my speedshop and we'll find out what's wrong.

Thanks for now, guys!

I took the stuff to my speedshop (that did not build the transmission, by the way)
They found out that there's something strange. They are going to take it apart and take care of matching the converter on the trans.

All parts should match, but they don't. In a few weeks I'll be back on it, first I'm off to Italy for holidays. Lago Maggiore

Yesterday I picked up my transmission at the shop.  :drama:

The past rebuild appeared to be a crappy one. Lots of dirt, worn parts, incorrectly mounted parts, wrong parts.
The pump gears did not match: stator and rotor both were used ones, and because both parts were propably taken out of different donors it wasn't possile to even rotate them....
Well, now I know why this guy is out of business, has tax-debts, has been on drugs, and went bankrupt about five years ago...

The good part at the end of the day: Now I'm sure my transmission is in perfect condition, and very able to handle my 520 HP 500 ftlb
Okay, it set me back two month-budgets. But a Big Mac and 6 mc. Nuggets honey-mustard turned my mood back into north position!

I inhale burning rubber and octane-booster, cut my fingers and infect them with 30-more years of desert sludge. I live under high-voltage power lines....... The nuggets make me healthy!

He painted the housing with dirt on it, with the pan off, so everything inside nicely painted too, installed a worn band, did not install a filter-extension, for picking up the fluid out of the deep pan, used a worn rotor and a crappy stator, a forward bushing was all grooved, another bushing installed in the wrong direction, left some parts out of the valve-body etc.
Well, as mentioned, life has been tough on the guy, so no need to take revenge.

The Belgian guy told me that it would have been easier for him and cheaper for me to rebuild from scratch, than fixing this tranny... Luckily he felt bad for us: my son has been working with him last year, so we have a good personal relationship. We paid for what he thought was fair. It set me back, but he was not the one that messed up. And of course, when our car is ready for it's inititial start up we will haul it over there, and he will do all final checks, and will fix our mess-ups. In this way, he made sure we will give him our business.

When my business is the way it has been so far this year, I think we will be ready for start up around january-february 2012.

But of course I will lay some good Volkswagen rubber in your street!

I eat those Mcnuggets too. 20 for $4.99.  Nice unhealthy meal with great sauces. A friend told me 30 years ago. With the sweet and sour sauce, it almost taste like shrimp. With my simple taste and love of shrimp, it tastes close enough.
