I'm about to pull my column to refinish it, so I was having a good look at the engine bay-side of it today.

When looking at the thinner shaft that goes from the coupler to the larger housing, it's not centered. It's actually so off-center it looks like it's rubbing on the outer housing.

The entire engine bay was painted black (chevy guys. blech) at some point, but I can still see that there's the white plastic insert there... but the fact that it's so far off center is making me think the bearing is shot.

Thoughts?

the bearing is not shot , there is no lower bearing , if you loosen the plate that supports the column at the firewall you can move the bottom of the column around until the inner shaft is centered inside the column , tighten the bolts & you are good to go .
You may have to loosen the two bolts under the lip of the dash .
