Need some advice...fellow Cuda owner
« on: July 24, 2011 - 10:18:46 PM »
We went to a local bigger show about a month ago and met an original owner '73 Cuda. 340 with an added 6-pack and a 4 speed. Orange with white interior...nice car all in all.

Later, the guy comes over to check out our car. When he finds out it was originally a 318/904, he starts to give me the "clone", "fake", etc.  The kids started needing attention at that moment, so I excused myself. We ended up trophying in a fairly large field (he didn't) and he acted like it was a crime.

Today, we went to another show and he was there. The awards presentation was held inside because of the heat, and he came over and sat at our table.  He asks where we got the car. I tell him western VA. He then asks if it's really a '71. I tell him "Yes". Then he says, "So you threw a set of wheels on it and started showing it?" I took him through the lengthy restoration and the time spent collecting parts.

Again, we trophied (and he didn't). When we got back to the table with the trophy, my 5 YO daughter starts celebrating. The guy gets up and storms out.

I don't know if I've been spoiled here or what, but I really expected the "band of brothers" feeling that the Mopar crowd at large seems to exhibit. What would you do?  Avoid the guy? Confront him? Not sure of the direction to go, but it seems ridiculous to have 2 of (maybe) 4 E-Body owners in the area not on speaking terms.

Brooks, you seem like too nice a guy to hang out with a jerk like that anyway.
Just blow him off and move on. He seems to have a inferiority complex or
something. Nobody needs that.  :2cents:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

wow,
seems very insecure.
I think you will find people like that everywhere though.
Just have to deal with it by ignoring him and his attitude, or confronting him if you feel you have to. 99% of people are cool but you just have the luck of one of the other 3 owners being in that 1%

IMO, avoid him. No point in wasting your time trying to come to an understanding with someone who you probably don't want to be friends with anyway.  :2cents:

you upgraded your 71 with wheels, engine, trans, paint, etc
and he has an original 73 w/ added 6 barrel
he cannot accept a once plain (now improved) 71 Barracuda 6cyl. out doing him and his original 73' cuda.

If it is a spectator judging he is the loser.  If it is an official judging originality should get more points.( does he have the 6barrel air cleaner)

aaaahhh F It
 he is a loser.............

"Brooks" is it? Don't know you or the "Gent" in question very well, but have had to deal with this very thing at car shows myself and can only offer what I did.....

You guys know the types that respond in this manner, yet you all just refer to them as "Losers" and "move on", without actually understanding WHY the "Gent" feels the way he does....I will try and explain MY idea of why he felt that way...Had one guy do this ver thing..Pulled up in his 1969 Charger blue with white tail sripe and told me that he "wouldn'tna painted his Charger like the General lee if he was me"..i told him I just enjoy the kids....
Well, low and behold, people's choice just happened to shine on my Orange Charger that day. Dude was pissed and he spoke loudly enough so that i could hear him saying "Figures, these idiots vote for that thing when there's alot better cars here"...
I confronted dude and asked "Oh yeah? Better cars? I think it has more to do with better people"....
Dude said that the only reason I won over him was it was the GL...I told him that's gotta hurt don't it? He said what? I said "when you pulled in, you just knew you were gonna take that trophy and your car was better built than my POS right?" He had nothing to say because I knew exactly what he was thinking and was right...

There are those at car shows that will feel completely comfortable talking with and enjoying an "E-bay" car owner parked next to them, and there are those that refuse it and hate it with a passion.
I'm one that would have prolly asked if it was purchased on EvilBay then once heard about the chasing of parts, begun to understand that MY 1973 Cuda cannot, will not, ever hold a candle to a 1971...The "Gent" shoulda known this being a Mopar guy and converted the 1973 into a 1971 if winning trophies was his unltimate goal..One doesn't park next to an "Ebay" Hemi Cuda in his/her "Homebuilt" no matter how many hours and hard work is invested and expect the average "Stupid" public to vote accordingly..I've actually had the public(Viewers choice), vote on cars for the damn color and not even care about how much time and effort went into the build..I for one don't enter said car shows because of this..I think it's wrong to look over someone else's obviously better done car, for something that has "Candyapple" red paint on it and was purchased "Buy it now"....I reallize I'm in the minority in feeling this way as well. Most wouldn't give a sh*t...While I understand why the "Gent" might have been PO'd at a "Buy it now" car beating out his own, I wouldn't have been as I know certain cars are "Trophy winners" I don't care how many Hemi engines are installed...He obviously thought HIS 1973 was gonna beat out your 1971, even though the 1971 being the more popular year, was a "Shoe in"...it didn't happen like he thought it woulda been great for it have. just like the "Little" small block with a slight cam, going up against the 600 Cu. In. Stroker BB with a Huffer poking through the hood...Sure it woulda been great if the SB could blow right past it, but let's face it, it isn't going to.....If it was me? I'd try taking to him again..You never know, he might be the long lost, best friend you never had...I met some of my best friends over arguements...

The guy sounds like he is just doing it for the trophy/bragging rights and not for right reasons-to enjoy hanging out with nice people at a car show.I would completely avoid the jerk!

it never hurts to try and level with the guy, but...
cooter is right. Some guys pour their life into a car and almost rightfully get super pi$$ed when an "ebay" clone buyer like myself pulls in and wins the trophies. But thats life. He has to deal with it better than that. If he cant understand that. Tough titties

and even us ebay buyers have to spend countless hours and sweat of our own too, constantly keeping things up.
I myself have spent at least a thousand hours of time (fiddling, tinkering, cleaning, repairing, replacing, upgrading, etc) in the past two years Ive been a cuda caretaker. We have every right to be proud of what we drive into any show.

I guess I would still be friendly but nothing more.  Sure wouldn't go out of my way to talk to him for sure!   I personally don't care if I win anything or not.  I like my cars and am very secure with what I have.  The only thing I have ever won was at Carlisle and it's probably because of cc.com.  If the members weren't there to vote for me, I'd probably not have won anything.   :dunno:   (and don't care)
