Hey Tommy,
Hope the guy doesn't get upset when he sees my 74 with a 440.

I used to get the same thing with my airplane.  I built it from plans, 4000 hours labor.  People that had kit built airplanes would try to compare the two.   Not a fair comparison.
I do what makes me happy, with the time  I have, $ I have.
I'm rebuilding my car cause I don't have the money to buy a complete car, and I enjoy working on it and making it MY car.

I could get some $ if I sold 1 of my 2 aerobatic airplanes, Yamaha R1 sportbike,   Or the wifes Vette!
Point is, everyone has different priorities, skills, time and money to spend on their car.   If someone can't understand that, Oh Well.

I agree , I have never cared about trophies , I have only ever won 1 in my life . I learned my lesson early , I showed a car once at other peoples request , the judges tore it apart !! On the way home & was able to beat a motorcycle light to light , I awlays cared more about tuning & performance than weather I had two headlights that were the original GE or not LOL

Personally I've never won at a show, and it doesn't really matter to me. I go to shows to see other people's cars, not so much to show mine. I used to have lots of people come up to my Pontiac and tell me stories about how some member of their family used to own one back in the day. There always seems to be somebody who doesn't like what you do to a car. Leave it a 6 cylinder and they ask why you don't throw in a small block, throw in a small block and they ask why you didn't leave it a 6 cylinder. I'm cloning my 72 Cuda into a 71 because I've always wanted a 71, the parts are available, and my car needs new quarters etc. If my car just needed paint then I would have a Sassy Grass 72, since it needs more I'm going to have a Sassy Grass 71 clone. If somebody at a show doesn't like it then they don't have to look at it. If I get a trophy then yay me, if I don't, I'll drive home and watch all the kids with their noses glued to the window watching the big green loud thing pass them.

I was in a wedding a few years ago when I was introduced to the best man, mostly because we both had Challengers. His was a 70 440-6 (don't know if it was original or clone), and I talked to him about it at length. The he asked about mine, and when I told him it was a 73 he snorted and walked off.

Brooks, I think we are spoiled by this site. There are really great people here.

i know people like that. they are just trophy hoarders. that's all they care about. they think their car IS THE BEST. they
don't think twice about ripping apart someones car and sometimes enjoy doing just that.

i'm not one for the whole trophy thing either. i'm not in it for the competition. i just enjoy driving my car and going to
cruises. i do go to a few shows each year. mainly because a group of friends will go to. if i were you, because that guy
stormed off like that, i'd keep those trophies i that back seat all the time  :roflsmiley: just so he has a little reminder  :roflsmiley:

last year, 2010, i finished restoring my '72 Challenger. this is a numbers correct 340, 4 speed car, F7 green with air, am/fm rear defog
and NO RALLYE package. yup that right, plain Jane 340, 4 speed car. i left nothing untouched when i restored my car.
i wanted it as if you drove it off the show room floor (with maybe a better paint job  :naughty:). i wanted to bring it to
Carlisle when it was all done. the the "stock" i took second place to a 73 Challenger, 318 auto car that was painted viper red. oh well,
whatcha gonna do  :eek7:. i can go on about how i scrounged the swap meet for hours trying to find the "correct bolts
for the car. but i understand that only matters to me, and maybe a dozen other people. but one needs to remember,
that's what the "people" liked better, at Carlisle at least. this guy needs to remember it's the judges choice.

YA KNOW!?!?
Imagine a guy bought a new '71, blew the motor and upgraded.  That never happened... :stirpot: I must wonder if he thinks a guy would tear into a numbers matching 318 whatever car?   :screwy:

Never avoid this guy.  Be nature, smile and say hello.  Ask him to show you his car and flatter him a bit.  Here is my favorite move: when he starts on his clone-rant, agree with him to the tee.  Works like a charm.  It might turn out that he was just on his period when you first met him... :smilielol:

However, you may want to avoid his type when the kids are in tow.

Now that is what it is really all about...man I love seeing the kids (well people of all ages) look smile and point at my car.  I have even had thumbs up from a few littel old ladies.

To the OP, as the proud owner of a 74 Cuda, and a modifyied one at that, enjoy your car, in what ever way YOU see fit.  Do not worry what anybody else thinks.  Nice to hear that you are bringing your kids along to the shows!

Brooks,
We had the same thing happen years ago when we had our T/A Challenger.  We took it to an outdoor show that was open to all cars.  We were talking to some people and found out they had Mopars too as soon as the wife found out we had our T/A at the show she would not talk to us again.  I guess she was afraid our T/A would beat her 1965 Dodge.  From that point on she was very hateful when she saw us at other shows.  She was so nice until she found out we had Mopars too.  To this day she still will not talk to us.  I do not understand why car people can not all get along.  We have a lot of terrible things going on in our Country and the last thing we need is jealous moron car people snubbing their noses at other car people.  We all need to stick together because some people in our Government would love to take  our cars away from us.
Life is too short.  I would ignore the guy and enjoy the show.

Hey Brooks, I wouldn't let this guy get to you. He is the very reason that I don't go to as many shows as I use to. Trophy hounds ruin car shows. Here's an idea. If you really want to make him feel bad for his attitude. The next time you win a trophy call him up to the trophy presentation in front of everyone and tell them that you would like him to have the trophy because you have beat him out of so many trophies in the past and really really feel bad for him and really hate to see a grown man cry .....again..
you can call me Jay

ROFL! That's awesome, Jay. I really don't know if he's a trophy hound, or just figures his car is "real" and my car is "fake", therefore his is better...

In my first conversation with him, he referred to my car as a "fake" when he found out it's a BH-base model. I told him "No, it's a real car."

He also referred to his car as "all-original", despite the 6-pack, Accel coil, wheels and new quarters/trunk/repaint.

My brother has a nice 69 Mustang fastback. At a show a couple years ago he spotted a nice restomod 70 Mustang FB (better condition than his own car), and parked next to him. Saw it had a 351W in it. Asked the owner if it's a 351? Owner replied 'no'. Baffled, my brother asked if it was 302, just to get the conversation going. Dude said 'no'. Refused to say what engine it was. (Found out later that it was a 351 stroked to 408). Anyway this guy had a really nice car and would have won a price that day, but refused to present it for the judges. My brother pulled up for fun and got a 5th price. Then he heard the dude say over his sholder that prices should be won at the track and not at shows. Well, my brother participated in the 1/8 dragrace that weekend, grumpy dude didn't. At least I know who had the most fun that weekend!

I really don't care for prices, It's not why I have my car. I've won a few, but those cheap prices are just collecting dust. It is cloned or whatever into an AAR. I have my car and have built it the way I have becouse I think it is the coolest thing rolling on the roads. I don't have it becouse of what other people think of it. But that beeing said It's always nice to get praise for the car. In fact it was photographed for a magazine yesterday, that was cool, and I'm thrilled to see it in the magazine, but it's the trackday at a nearby roadrace track in three weeks I really look forward to. :2cents:

Since you go to these shows with your kids, I'd do my best to avoid this guy.  He could just be a jerk, or he may be a little unstable, either way I wouldn't want him around my my kids when they were young.  Just a thought ....

well you don't have one more friend or one less friend as you still don't really know him and don't really need to know him
I for one go to car shows just to see the cars ,don't care who wins and never will,,I took an  original 72 challenger with build sheet an fender tag, I am 2nd owner of the car (no motor or tranny long gone) and converted it to a 70 style body because I wanted to and could care less what anybody thinks,,it gets the same looks as an original does from anybody that really just likes the old cars,,those numbers matching cars don't mean crap, they trailer the same, they look the same and they run the same, like stock,,who wants everything the same,,I don't own trailer queens and I am always up for an up grade,,I will drive my car everyday while the guys like that are polishing there chrome until they can get to the next car show to put down fakes,,its there loss as not to enjoy the car as much because there afraid to drive it just as there afraid to make real friends and just talk cars,,its his loss not to enjoy another car enthusiast and learn something about real people as it sounds like he is the fake as his car doesn't leave gold marks, it leaves black marks just like mine ,,mine just does it more often :burnout:  :rebel:
