71 340 shaker cuda parts/ color questions
« on: July 25, 2011 - 01:10:04 PM »
Hey all love this site the amount of knowledge is unbeatable!

I am currently blasting and painting parts for a 1971 340 /727 (26" rad) hardtop cuda with a shaker, a few questions for anyone are:

1.did 340 cuda use H pipes in exhaust system?

2.did they have overflow bottles always or an option?

3.what color should th horns be?
blk gloss, semi gloss, textured?

any help would be great

thanks

Don't know about the H-pipe...

The overflow bottle was only available in 74...maybe late 73.

The horns were dipped in cheap gloss black paint.  It wouldn't have had that high gloss shine that we think of as gloss today.  Also, due to the paint being really low quality, the paint started loosing some of its gloss very early in the cars life.

When was your car built?  71's built after April/May came with blue painted 340's.

Not much I can add here, but I agree there was no overflow bottle.

The H-pipe exhaust was probably not stock either. The H-pipe and X-pipe configurations are more efficient than two pipes running straight back.

Hey Brooks

Does your car still have the fender tag and VIN sticker?  There will be an SPD (scheduled production date) stamped on the tag.  Also, the VIN sticker on the drivers door will have the month the car was built on it.  The door sticker is a better determining factory of when the car was build.  Cars were almost never built on the SPD.

For instance, the SPD of my Challenger is 927.(Sept 27th) The car was accually built on October 12th.  The door sticker says 10-72.
