Which would you use, Indy 440EZ or Mopar Stage 6 heads
« on: July 26, 2011 - 06:09:01 AM »
Just comparing prices and they are both close to the same for me $ wise . Which will give me better performance?
What I like about the Mopar stage 6 heads is that I can use a 440 intake.
What are your thoughts?

You need offset rockers for the Indy heads? Hummm I didn't know that? Ugg more money...
The Stage 6 heads will use the stock rocker set up if you want to.

The Stage 6 are a greta head but I have never done a dyno test with both the EZ & 6 to see which is better , the EZ is easier to get & does Not require external oil lines , the 440-1 Indys did & the oiling had to be restricted or it flooded the heads with oil , the cam fed pulse system is better , the Indys do need to offset rocker though & you can get the EX with max wedge port size .
What are you thinking ? you have the Stage 6 heads , not going to use them ?

Yep I have the stage 6  raw semifinished castings with no holes for valves andno seats installed. I have the seats and guides.
I'm just thinking  it's gonna cost close to the same as the indy 440 ez heads and it's gonna cost to get these done up. Mind you I didn't factor in the special rocker gear for the Indy head....

Ya the "Chapman" stage 6 head require special rocker set ups. Mine are not Chapmans.

Brad - my EZs use stock gear and were basically replacement heads for stock. No fancy oiling system required. Use Cometic gaskets though on whatever you use. Make sure the valley cover is sealed with a product called "the right stuff" or you will be finding out why the Cometic gaskets can be reused - ask me how I know this. You have to install one head, then the valley plate (with sealer on) then the second head. I use stock Mopar extra thick wall rocker shafts and Crane 273 style adjustable ductile iron rockers. No probs to 7000RPM. Also used the Hughes rocker shaft stud kit but it does seem a little too short on some of the studs though - ask them about that. Watch the commpression ratio with flat tops. My Ross pistons have a (I think 12cc) dish machined in them. Torqued to 65 with ARP head bolts threads oiled before installing. Absolutely no issues for 2 years.
Good luck

Can you use a factory valley pan gasket with the Indy EZ heads or do you have to use an Indy cast one?

I've got the EZ's on my 512 stroker. You can't use the stock "bath tub"style valley pan. I used their plate. Works like a champ. No leaks so far! Jeff

I'm gonna go with the stage 6 castings. I got them at a good deal so I might as well use them up. I can do a lot of the work myself on the mill to save some cash.
Jason/Neil... I guess with it being a lowdeck R block the valley plate is specific for the 400/383 block. Doesn't look all that hard to make one if they are stupid expencive?

Looking at rockers now.... I like the T&D or Jessel stuff!  :grinyes:

Mancini has a 2 piece stainless plate available for a reasonable cost , it will work with either B or RB engines , you have to drill the holes in the center to seal it & at least you do not have to remove the head if it leaks or you need to get to the lifters for some reason , l am sure you could make one like it out of sheet metal easily though .
T&D or Jesel make some awesome stuff ,Cheap too !! ......................... Not
