Hints for good (calendar) pics

Hints on getting good pics:

1.   Match the background properly with your car.
•   Look for elements that might look like they’re “poking up through your car,” like signs and trees.
•   Generally, elements like lines in a parking lot are distracting. Ditto for power lines, phone lines.
•   Make sure that your car stands out from the background.

2.   Look for interesting angles.
•   ¾ angles tend to work well
•   Head-on shots and side-on shots tend to be weak…but they can work.
•   Try getting high above your car or on the ground for other interesting angles.

3.   Make sure your car is reasonably obvious. For instance, don’t bury it in the background. At the same time, be careful to not cut off any parts of the car, and leave a little room to account for any necessary cropping.

4.   Light
•   Usually, it’s best to have the sun behind you and possibly to one side. For most shots, having the sun in the shot or shining from above is not good.
o   Best hours for light are the first few hours of the day, or the late afternoon or early evening.
o   Shooting within a couple of hours of noon tends to result in weaker photographs that look flat.
o   Sometimes using a flash, even in daylight, can help fill in some dark areas. On the other hand, there are some dark areas, like, say the radiator, that tend to look better dark.
o   Overcast days tend to yield better results than bright sunny days.

5.   Things that I don’t necessarily agree with, but which a lot of people say, so I feel you should know:
•   Make sure the front rims are facing the camera.
o   I think this tends to be true, but like all compositional questions, it can sometimes be ignored
•   Don’t shoot your car on the grass.
o   This is a lot more problematic. Some cars look great on grass; others don’t. I think a well-framed, well-composed shot on grass beats a poorly-framed, poorly-composed shot on a parking lot, especially if the parking lines are distracting from the car.

We have a lot of talented amateurs and more than one professional here. Guys and girls, feel free to jump in with additional hints, or debate what's posted above. If you have questions about how to get a good shot, post them as well. Post shots here for comment.

...during the last 30 years I have had numerous cars in magazines, most photographers won't even shoot a car on grass as very few magazines will print them

...green grass /trees are ugly in the background, too dark
...doesn't compliment the color of most cars, especially black
...cars weren't made to drive on grass

3 basic types of photo

...plain...no background at all...I took this photo at a local airport
...wall...can be a building, corn etc...something that stops the eye just behind the car
...artsy...the car is part of the total picture

Great hints! I look forward too see this years submissions. Grass ain't compatible with car photos unless you're riding BF Mud&Terrain tyres on your car.  :grinno:

Also try to shoot against a color that is opposite in the spectrum from your cars color.  If you have a red car, shoot against something green or blue.  If you have a green car, shoot against something red or orange.

I think that's good advice to make the car pop, which is very likely the goal of shots for the calendar. For the record, you can get some "artsy" results by doing the opposite, and keeping the background within the same tonal range as the car.

I'm trying to help a couple of members get pics of their cars, and one strategy I'm pursuing I thought might help anyone.

Go to your local craigslist. At the bottom of the page is a section titled "Services." Click on "Creative" then do a search for "Photo." Most of the time you'll be ale to find photographers trying to break into professional work who, in the interest of pumping up their portfolios, will do photography for free. Most of the time they're looking to do wedding or model shoots, or product shoots, but take my word for it, they'll have no problem shooting a car.

If anyone around the Chicagoland Area would like pictures of their cars taken.  Let me know.  I'll do it no charge.

Thanks, Ryan. That's a great offer.

Using a polarizing filter can kill reflections off glass or in paint
using a flash will often highlight reflectors on the car as well as filling in dark areas

Good advice. Polarizers are also how photographers get incredibly blue skies and white clouds.

Does anyone want to see this thread stay stickied? My first thought when I started it was that it might be a good thing to keep around, but I don't think there's really a lot of interest here.
