Power Steering Problem
« on: July 30, 2011 - 10:18:31 AM »
My '70 Challenger's power steering is so light that it is dangerous, no road feel of feed back. Is there any modification that could be done to perhaps lower the oil pressure to reduce assistance. I am seriously thinking of just removing the P.S. and fitting a manual steering which really doesn't worry me but manual boxes like after market boxes are not available here in Australia unless I import ex USA. Any comments or suggestions?
Dave

Firm Feel sells upgraded steering boxes in three levels that are supposed to deliver better road feel. Some people here have installed them, so hopefully they'll chime in with their results.

I'm all for DIY. Note that this fixes the over-assist issue, but does nothing to address the state of the steering box itself. If you have an original box, especially on a car that was driven through it's useful life at the time, it's probably worn out ad still needs some attention.

Yes I am aware of the Firmfeel boxes, if I have to import a box it will be a manual box and get positive control back, I know that the column will have to changed or modified. I had heard of a modification which I think that other link to moparaction might be but I have tried 3 times to download and it locks up my computor half way through the download.

adding all the caster possible helps but the Mopar power steering is definatly over engineered & has no feel to it which is why my cars are manual steering

I'd try the Pump mod first since its cheap & pretty easy to do . I'd also be curious as to how it actually performs. :icon16:

The firm feel setup on mine is nice but still not as defined as the original manual steering IMO. Lots of shipping $$ for the FF mod to consider also.

Thanks Neil looks like I will have to find a manual steering box as I am still not able to down load the mod link.

I will play around with the pump and see if that can help otherwise if I have to pay shipping it will be a manual box as I prefer positive response from my steering.   :2thumbs:

Weird idea, but would using a smaller diameter steering wheel help?  :dunno:

I don't know how much but a smaller diameter wheel has a shorter level arm and would require more force to turn the wheel.  Don't know if a non-stock wheel is in the cards for you though.  Just a thought...

Good thought but no it will not help at all as the assistance is inside the box, cannot even change the pulley size as they nearly touch now.

Is it not self-centering on its own, have too much play before responding, or just too easy to steer?  My Cuda is a bit of a handful steering-wise when I'm on the road but I believe my problem is not enough positive caster.

I am using the original equipment components.

No it is doing everything right except that as most power steering from this era had tooooo much assist which took out any feed back through the steering and I prefer to have the road feel.
