Stripped Thread in Head for Exhaust Manifold
« on: July 31, 2011 - 10:58:23 AM »
The right front stud for the exhaust manifold will not tighten in the head and it appears to be the threads in the head that are the problem.  I would consider living with it but unfortunately it taps into the water jacket so I really need to have it fixed or at least sealed.  Does anyone have any recommendations for me on this?  Would JB weld work, at least for the time being?  How about helicoil or just tapping out for larger size stud or bolt?  I can see it would be very difficult to get a drill in there without removing the head so is it possible to just tap to the next size without drilling?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am planning on driving the car out to the Mopar Nationals in a couple weeks and am running out of time getting it road worthy.

That`s pretty close. would it be possible to grind most of the thread out, perhaps with a dremel tool or a 90 degree drill?  For M10 thread you would need a hole 8.2 - 8.5 mm ( 0.33" I think...? )  put on a drop of sealer and you ready to go.  :2thumbs:  I would not try cutting m10 in the hole you have now ( 7.9mm) if the tap breaks you have a bigger problem.

Have you tried a wee bit longer bolt?.. there may be some more threads deeper in the hole but be careful not to go to long.

a helicoil will work but it will leak , you have to seal the threads between the head & helicoil & between the helicoil & stud , there is a product called timesert that would work better , , JB weld might seal the hole but you won't have enough strength to tighten the nut on

Permatex between stud, coil, and head be sufficient to prevent leaking?  How readily available is timesert?

Maybe or use Penetrating locktite green , I am not saying it can't be sealed but it can be difficult
