    I have been put in a very bad position by my company, and I need some info for my planned response.

    Short form, there was a recent physical expansion of the office space. Before this expansion, my work area was tolerable. After the expansion, it’s a major thoroughfare where everyone stops to chat with anyone they meet. To make matters worse, they moved an entire group of children (recent college graduates, but they’re immature enough to have laughed at the acronym STD in relationship to a discussion concerning short term disability) into the cubes near mine; they spend large portions of their days loudly discussing make-up and nail polish tips over their cube walls, and where to find the best cheesecake.

    I’ve been raising hell about this situation for weeks. They’ve come back with a very fancy, long-winded response which boils down to “Deal with it.” In the meantime, they’ve moved lots of people into other cubes, and denied my requests to move 5 times, to five different locations.

    Today I learned that one of the other moves was conducted because the employee claims to have ADD. I dislike the ethical implications of this, but it seems to be the only solution open to me. I need to know how I can go about getting a doctor to certify me as having ADD to I can force them to move me. Any info is appreciated.

    Having ADD and a son with ADD I hope I can shed some light on this for you.  You can start by telling your PCP that you are having difficulty completing tasks and/or staying focused.  Enough that it's concerning you and you want to do something about it.  Hopefully they will refer you to a psychiatrist where they can evaluate you.  Once there, you'll probably have to answer some history questions related to ADD "thoughts" (meaning, have you always felt like you can't finish a project; is it hard to stay focused, etc.) and they will probably give you a form for someone "close" to you to fill out, be it your wife, co-worker, etc.  Even before that is complete, they may deem that you have 'ADD' and prescribe medicine.  Once the meds are prescribed, you can then get a dr's. note stating you have ADD and request to move your cube.

    That's in a perfect world....but honestly, if you don't have ADD then the  pysch will probably pick up on that, OR if they don't, but presrcibe you meds, they will wonder why you never come back for a refill.  Some pysch's even require several visits within weeks of each other just to be safe and to accurately diagnose the patient....so if you have 5 office visits only to have them say "look, we don't think you have ADD but you may have xxx" then you've spent some money (co-pays, etc.) and time for nothing.  Either way, it's probably not a good idea to fake ADD just to move your cube.

    Alternative solution may be what's called  Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome (or 4S).  Not too sure WHO diagnoses you with this but people with this disorder find it very difficult to function with certain noises and such.  Here's a great link to it: http://soundsensitive.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46&Itemid=102

    Yes, you could argue that the noise disorder could be part of ADD but 4S is probably the more accurate for people with this disorder.

    Either way, I don't think you should fake anything.  Issues could arise from being inaccurately diagnosed whether it be insurance issues or work related.  Not to mention if you do "fake" something then you could be fired for lying to your employer amoungst other things.

    It's just my 2 cents....

    I wouldnt lie about a disorder.  That will haunt you.

    Of course, "rocking the boat" can too.

    To some degree, unfortunately, sometimes you DO have to "deal with it".  Distractions in an office setting hen its cubes is par for the course.

    That is why supervisors get doors and offices...LOL  They say it is because they have to deal with confidential issues, but we all know better.   :bigsmile:

    That said, if its constant, what does your direct supervisor have to say about it? Clearly if they have moved some folks already, the higher ups know it s an issue.  Sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

    Be the squeaky wheel.

    Of course, sometiomes the squeaky wheel just gets replaced.  LOL

    Another way, have your older workplace buddies show up at your cube to raise all sorts of holy hell and noise when the kids are trying to concentrate....or start whistling....or ...well, you get the picture.

    Fight fire with fire.

    When it comes to a head, then maybe both sides can see the issue.

    Just dont obsess over it.....they wont care, and you will be even more miserable for it.

    Thanks for the info. I concur with your opinion, and I tend to think that about 10 times as many people are diagnosed with ADD as actually have ADD. That being said, I'm at my whit's end.

    Shandango,  my immediate supervisor is part of the problem. If I read the situation right, she's either being told to shut up and let it drop, or she's making behind the scenes deals to hang me out to get other things she wants to get.

    Bottom line is that I have a job that is both creative and which requires me to read and comprehend lots of dull, dry, boring technical specs. When I cannot concentrate, I cannot work.

    It sucks that you should need them in an office but earplugs or earmuffs that you can take out/off when needed may be the answer.

    I've thought about this. The only kink is that, unlike most people, music isn't "white noise" for me, and they block everything else. Actually, they block the music too. I offered to buy the headphones and pay for a Sirius subscription if they would unblock Sirius, so I could listen to talk radio, or some streaming TV (which is white noise for me). Answer: "That's against company policy."
