Any automotive machinists in here? I need some sizes?
« on: August 08, 2011 - 05:37:35 PM »
Just putting valve guides in my aluminum heads and need to know how much of an interfearance fit the guides need? I'm intalling 11/32 valve guides in a pair of Mopar Stage VI heads.
Thanks Brad

bronze guide in aluminum head should have bout .0035 - .004 press fit
iron guide in aluminum head bout .003-.0035
definitely use anti-gall on them when you install them.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

By "anti-gall" do you mean like anti-sieze?
I have to heat up the heads to install the valve seats , so for the guides do you install them with the head hot too?

Brad, a special anti galling lubricant is made for aluminum. Mcmaster car or
any tool shop supply will have it. If not, I have also used PB blaster or WD40 if you have too.
If you have the ability to heat the head thoroughly, than it is a good idea.  Just remember, either way you do it
you will have to ream the guides to fit the valves properly. Do you know how far to drive the guides in?

No I don't know yet, as I'm installing longer than stock valves. First step was to drill and ream the raw castings so I could install the valves ( machined temperary seats in the aluminum) so I could CC them so I get get a stroker kit ordered. I'll know how far to install them when I machine for the spring pockets. They have a shoulder on them
( the guides) They are from Isky.
I'll mill off the rocker shaft saddles and make ( or buy?) new stands for the shafts when I figure out some sizes.

I was going to say tighter on the intake valves closer to .002  & closer to 3.5-4 on the exhaust as the exhaust valves run much hotter
