Second tag
« on: August 10, 2011 - 09:16:05 PM »

There's a second tag above my first tag with some additional numbers and the VIN.  See the picture:

I know there are bunch of sites to decode the main tag. What about the second tag? Is there a site ot look it up or does anyone know what they mean?

Someone will jump in and tel us if I'm wrong, but I think the code pool is the same for both tags, and that two tags were installed on cars that had two many options to list on one tag. The exception would be the Trans Am cars, that always had a second tag that just said "Trans Am."

the other exception were the Hemi cars, they mostly had a second (or third) tag with just "Hemi Fender" on it.

Yep, high option car if it needs two tags!  Looks like you had two options to many.  The 26" radiator and built on line 2 put you over the one tag limit.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

Did the factory put tags upside down like that on '72+ cars?  Or did an owner put that there like that?

Not sure, that's how the car came when I got it.

So 26 is the 26" radiator...what are the others? I thought 313 was the build date: 3/13/1974

Pretty neat, never saw the tag upside down like that.

Yes, I would think the 313 is March 13, 1974.

Are there any hole provisions, as if another tag was to the right of the main tag?  Is that a full tag under there but just upside down?

You know I never thought to remove them and look.  So I went out to the garage and did:

The back of the three tags:

The fender with them removed.  Is that circled spot a mounting hole?  (Don't blame me I didn't paint the engine bay black):

The tags separated:
"B" tag (what is this anyhow?)

The main tag

The extra tag

Lining up the paint lines and stains, I think this is how they went together:

Time for a test fit (I left the "B" tag off because it's small and I didn't want to drop it)

So it looks like that is a mounting hole.  Unfortunately it's filled with who knows what and needs to be cleaned out before I can mount the tags proper.

That is definitely how the tag goes.
I have never seen a tag like the first picture you posted.
Must have been the previous owner that did that.
The small tag that has the B on it is an assembly line tag.
Usually those are not present.
That tag would have been alot longer while it was on the assembly line.
I do believe that as the car went down the assembly line workers would cut off the part that pertained to them as they finished the job.
Really cool to have one in my opinion.
Most folks have thrown them away over the life of a car.
They will cut your forearm pretty good if your not careful.

Here is a partial picture of a duster assembly tag and fender tag.
I own this car and have been trying to sell it.

Anyway, not a very good picture.  Will look for more.

Yep, that looks more like it!  :grinyes:  Don't know why it was like that.  Especially after you see the second tag was painted all red it probably means it was not under the first tag when the car was painted at the factory.

The black stuff may be undercoat.  Under the hood of my car it looks like that after the original owner undercoated it.

Yeah the picture worked.  Thanks for the info. Cool stuff. I never knew about the assembly tags.  So they are like the broadcast sheet....something that was never supposed to make it to the owners.

It looks like the tags were stacked before it was painted/undercoated.  When they are stacked you can't see any of the original color on the fender.  Laid out correctly there's a section of the original paint visible.  Not to mention the mounting hole is clogged with paint/undercoat.  Assuming the engine compartment was changed at the same time the rest of the paint was put on, they have been like that since 1979.

Any idea what the L2 and 192 codes mean?
