« on: August 11, 2011 - 01:06:52 PM »
I am looking for another project. I ocassionally see a 340 with a three speed and the cuda package. What's up with this? weren't they all 4sp for performance?  :burnout:

No, I have a 3-speed 340 Challenger. Many drag racers believed the 3 speed setup was better.

3-speeds were the standard trans.

4-speed was a $200 option.  Pricey back then.  Some folks think that extra gear wasn't worth it.

Not sure the 3 spd was better but the 4 spd was an option.

I have a 73 cuda that was ordered specifically for drag racing back in the day.  The original owner told me the 3 speed was better in the quarter mile.  He found the 73 motor to be too weak so that went bye bye for a 70 340.  The 70 motor kept blowing up the flywheel so a 727 was installed and thats how she sits now.
