Fuel gauge problem

I am having a problem with the fuel gauge.  It was working a month ago but now it is stuck on ‘E’, (yes it has a full tank).  Do you know of a test procedure for the sending unit and /or the gauge itself?  The car is a ’70 Challenger 440 with the rallye cluster.  This is driving me crazy.  Any help would be appreciated before I get the hammer out.  Thanks and drive safe.     ???

does all the other gauges work??

you will need a ohm meter to check the resistance of the sending unit.

it could be a bad ground to the tank- in my chally I drilled a small hole on the locking ring and then grounded it to the frame. no more problems

take the drivers side kick panel off-behind it is a wiring connector- disconnect it.
with the ohm meter check between the dark blue wire and a good ground on the car.

a full taNK SHOULD READ AROUND 10 OHM'S
A EMPTY TANK- AROUND 75 OHM'S

IF YOU GET NO READING OR A HIGHER READING-THEN A BAD GROUND OR A WIRE IS BROKEN. ALSO CHECK TO SEE IF THE CONNECTOR IS ON THE SENDING UNIT.

Thanks for the quick response.  I will try the ohm meter tonight.  Now I have a leak at the locking ring so I have to find a way to seal it. I hope I don’t have to take the sending unit out. I also have a extra ground wire from the edge of the tank to the frame rail. All the other gauges work fine.

don't drill into the tank-it is crimp sealed and you could set of a spark- not good for the chally!!!!!!


cleanup the locking ring back to bare metal, drill the small lip and bolt, washer/nut it.

for the leak- new gasket is the best.

Unplug the wire from the sending unit and ground it. The guage should go past the full mark with the key in the ON position. If it doesn't I would bet it's the guage. When you pull the cluster loose find the wire from the sending unit and do the ground test again. If the guage dosn't go past full you have you have proven that it's not the wiring between the sending unit and the dash.
