Had to get it towed home today! GRRRRR
« on: August 12, 2011 - 06:24:17 PM »
Starter makes a loud clicking noise buy doesn't seem to engage the flywheel?  :dunno:  It's maybe a year old mini starter style ( same a Dakota I think) . Not looking forward to this pain in the butt job as I think the header needs to come off.
Of cource it happened at my buddy the engine builders shop....all I heard is ribbing about Dodges.... they are into Chevy's mainly.

I'd rather tow a Dodge than drive a Chevy

Typical Nippendenso starter problem....Too bad I haven't found a supplier for the two little "Contacts" that arc until the typical "Groove" wears in 'em, then the dreaded "Click".."Click".."Click"....Just think Brad, ifn' you had a 4 gear in that damn thing, you'd have left two black marks when those Chebby guys began to even think of talkin' sh*t...

sorry to hear that Brad.
I had to replace my mini starter last year, and it took me all of 20 minutes to swap.
Thats an issue that you probably didnt count on when you spent all that time last year on your new headers.  :banghead:

I bet the starter will fit through the headers , you might have to remove the center link

Bummer! Mine was on a flat-bed several times unfortunately. It happens! I even drove it home when the trans nearly grenaded. 2-3 shift and the rear tires LOCKED UP.  Trans band nearly welded itself to the drum. b-l-a-c-k ATF, trans was toast....so I drove it 15 miles home in second (no  1st, 3rd, reverse, didn't even roll back in neutral lol). Other time I limped home I had bent several valves  :grinno:

:smilielol:   Naw it's all good. I checked and he didn't have a starter in stock. Not a big deal, just wounded my pride more than anything! I have CAA ( same as AAA) so it didn't cost me a dime.

Neil, I WISH she towed me home!  :roflsmiley: what's the year of Dakota you get starters from? If they are cheap enough wouldn't hurt to have a spare . I'll either fix it myself or send out the old one to be fixed. Is it the heat that does them in? I assume as it's so close to the header? I was wondering about making a heat shield?
Cooter , ya that's what my buddy's said... too bad it wasen't a 4 speed.

You don't need to take them right off Brad, but you do need to back off the header bolts so the header can tilt a bit.
