New Hemi - pros and cons
« on: August 15, 2011 - 01:35:54 PM »
I am toying with the idea of getting a motor out of a wrecked newer Challenger or Charger and going with that. What are the pros and cons of this that I may be missing? I'm assuming, for instance, that the PCM will have a governor; can it be bypassed, and if so, how hard is it? Any ideas of how to get a motor cheap?

not having done this yet it seems to be straight forward to a point , mount kits are available , small block transmissions bolt up although 518 requires the floor to be reworked for clearance in the T bar crossmember , I believe you have to run a different PCM , the factory one runs everything , you need to have one to control the engine or engine trans seperatly

Hey, Neil. when you say the factory PCM runs everything, are you saying it's a PCM and BCM combined?

Also, Rob got his 518 in with no cutting. Is the fitment different with the new Hemi block?

well we need clarification , to my knowledge the factory PCM will not run the engine alone , possibly it would work using the 518 trans but the 545RFE is what is normally used , I was told you need a separate computer when installing into an older chassis . Also to my knowledge the 518 is wider for the overdrive right where it lines up the the torsion bar crossmember / trans nout area so the crossmember needed to be reworked to clear
