How does fuel sending unit come out?

I am trying to replace my fuel sending unit on my 73 challenger, and can't figure out how to get it out without breaking it.  Any help would be appreciated.

All it takes is a hammer and large flat blade screw driver. Remove the driver's side rear tire for better access. There is a retainer ring holding it in. There are 3 tabs on the ring. I just can't remember which way you have to hammer it to get it out. Right, or left?

My old boss would use a screwdriver and hammer all the time to remove the lock ring.  That's not a good idea though.  That can create a spark.  It's best to use a brass punch....or buy a lock ring tool.

I never knew about a tool to do this back then.  Besides, I love using a hammer.

Yeah, I guess you are right. I just remember something about the job not being as I would have thought.

Maybe it was the retainer ring? It didn't look correct turning it to the right to install it again. I found out different after I filled up the tank.
