Removing Chrome - any ideas

I am refinishing a set of 70 bumperettes for my 74.  I have no interest in rechroming them, I will paint them.  Is it possible to strip the chrome off of them.

I have had good luck wth painting chrome in the past, but I bet it woudl be better if I striped the chrome off.

I'm pretty sure a chrome shop can chemically strip the chrome.  Kind of the reverse of the chroming process.  I don't know of another way to do it.

Jason, I know Brian Pollock who owns Cambridge Custom Chrome and they don't take the chrome off chemically anymore; they grind it off. The chemical waste costs something like $2000 a barrel and that's why. Besides, the vast percentage of it is actually nickle anyways. Take a sander to it, it'll be way cheaper.   Ian

I have removed chrome plating from small parts by soaking them in Acetone.  You will need enough Acetone to cover the item you want stripped, not cheap for a bumper, and you need to cover the container so the Acetone will not evaporate.  Let it soak for about four hours, and then scrub off the chrome with a "brillo" pad and some more acetone.

The biggest set back with this is the cost of the Acetone and the disposal of the remaining liquid.

Thanks guys...  I may try the acetone...I may just sand them.  Not sure yet.

Ian, any idea what cambridge chrome charges to chrome a bumper (just ball park).

I`ve sanded off chrome.  take a GOOD quality paper and a sandingblock with a rubber-ish pad.  I started with a 120 grit paper. At first it seemed like nothing would come off, but once it starts to bite into the chrome, it comes right off

I called them 2 years ago about my car's bumpers and their "estimate" back then was $1,300.00 for both front and back. I ended up buying mine at the Nat's for under $300.00 each with a core exchange.
