Go look for a forged steel crank. I've heard 318 is the same crank. :2cents:

I may have missed another thread you have done.  What are you trying to build?

Steel would be my choice also , but for a budget build I bet it would live as long as you do not intend to used NOS or make stupid power with it
the 318 crank is steel usually but not stroked

Brads right about the truck 318 steel crank, but, unless you're going to wind the wee out of it-over 5500-6000 rpm, that cast steel crank will work just fine. I see they've got 4340 rods for $279 and that might be something to consider, because most of the ones that I've seen blow, it started with the rods. For $785 you can buy the crank, forged rods and pistons, rings and main/rod bearings. That's a pretty damn good price for a stroker kit; and  the Chevy guys will never know what hit 'em!  :2cents:

My goal for this build is a 500 horse street pounder I can let loose once in a while.  A good starting point to add small goodies (add on's) to down the road.  Plus I really just want a stroker.

I have built a lot of motors; but not recently.  So I am not up to speed on all the current costs.  I would think that the cheapest way to 500 hp would still be the 440 motor.  How driveable do you want the car to be?  Do you want to drive it 200 miles each way to a show, etc?  Do you want to use it around town and have no concern about gas mileage?  How do you want the car to stop and handle corners?  Big blocks and small blocks make the car react differently in the same situations.  Do you want to mainly go in a straight line and pick on motorcycles because there aren't any cars in your area that are fast enough for you to bother racing?

cudasteve, budget build/500 hp is 2 phrases that should not be combined as assembly goal.  Strokers make tq not alot of HP. Main focus is on heads and cfm flow.  You need around 5700/6000 rpms with a good 4 inch stroke crank. Then 295/300 cff head flow to have a chance at the 500 hp goal, with matching cam, intake, and carb. Plus a 360 block stroker crank is free cubes. 500 hp sm blk engines have to work harder to last than bb engines.  You are wanting a pump gas 500 hp engine I suppose.  Do not base your build on just a cheap priced cast crank.  A quality piece goes a long way, and wins more races.
