Will Not Idle
« on: August 16, 2011 - 08:19:40 PM »
New 800 edelbrock carb on a 4 speed rebuilt 440. There are no vacuum lines and the vacuum ports are plugged the only line to carb is the hose from the pvc. After warming up and idling for10 minutes it will stall. Starts back up no problem and drives fine until you stop and will stall again. When it starts to stall I can pull pvc hose and it will keep running until I reattach hose.

then, that sounds like it is flooding at idle...or on the verge of it.  Pulling the pcv line makes it go a lot leaner

Is there a regulator on it? Mechanical pump? Can you see fuel dribbling out the boosters when it's idling with the hose on? Try tapping on the carb body where the fuel line goes into it-gently. It may have a sticky needle/seat. Pressure shouldn't be more than approx. 7psi at the carb.  :2cents:

It is a Mechanical pump no regulator can not see any dribbling. it dose have a banjo fitting so it will clear air cleaner.

well I would remove the top of the carb & check the float level . they call for 7/16 , I usually set it a bit higher , , once you do that loosen the screw above the metering rods , move the plates over a bit & see if the rods stay down at idle in gear if auto  , if not you need lighter springs under the metering rods to keep it from flooding . I assume you have adjusted the idle screws so it idles as high as possible .

The idle screws were adjusted. I will give the rest a try.
Thanks

I tapped on the carb where the fuel line enters and drove it for 30 miles. It did not stall once. It is never that easy but it worked .
Thank You
